Chapter 126

Does Scarlet do fine on the way back?
No, she does not
...
...
You close the distance between you and Scarlet and whisper. “We’re lost, aren’t we?”
She subtly nods, whispering. “we are,” annoyingly.
Alexandra is behind you, unaware of the confirmation exchanged between the two of you.
Scarlet exhales, carefully presenting the map out in front of her. You study it with her, now going a little slower so you can see what directions you need to take. “If we are where I think we currently are, we will reach a little town, perhaps settle in for the night and continue in the morning.”
“And if that doesn’t work?”
“We have tents,” Scarlet says. “But let’s just hope we aren’t as lost as I think we are…”
You look away from the map. The overcast shades the forest with bleak colors. The only sound you hear is the crunching beneath your feet and the gentle breathing of your 3-person party as you go further and further into the unknown.
Eventually, by the grace of God Almighty, you discover a bleach sign peeking from the snow. Scarlet swallows and kicks the snow away from its face. “Arrowhead,” reads the sign. It’s the little town she was hoping to find. A wave of relief goes over Scarlet when she reads this, and she fights the smile that tries to form on her lips.
She turns around to Alexandra. “Right where we need to be. Told you I didn’t get lost.”
Alexandra joins the circle and kneels down to clean the rest of the sign. “Arrowhead. Grab, gulp, go. Nowhere’s pitstop. Established 2072… you think this place is still running?”
“I hope so,” Scarlet takes out the map loudly this time, making a big show unlike before. “This map was made in…”
Scarlet trails off. “Well, I mean. It’s a refurbishment from 3 years ago—“
“The original print date?”
“I-“ she squints. “I can’t find it.”
You know she’s lying, but you don’t want to get involved.
“Scarlet,” Alexandra says. “We ought to keep moving. If we’re caught out here at night with the equipment, we have—“
“We have to go to Arrowhead. Otherwise, we WILL be out here at night. We’re spending the night there.”
“Let’s not jump the boat,” Alexandra says. “We only have 4 hours of sunshine left. Let’s see what it looks like, but if it’s abandoned, we have to bail.”
“Scared of ghosts?” Scarlet offensively spits. “We can sleep in the buildings. Abandoned or not.”
When Alexandra fails to follow up, Scarlet throws her hands out in exasperation. “Something you’re not telling us?”
“I’m not hiding anything.” Alexandra wrinkles her face. “Don't tell me I’m the only one with a bad feeling about this place.”
She turns to you desperately. “Come on. Really?”
Surprisingly, Scarlet pushes Alexandra back. “We’re going in Arrowhead, mother fucker!”
Alexandra's eyes are wide with shock, and she frowns in anger. “You’re not in charge here!”
As the situation goes from bad to worse, you realize that you’re going to have to step in and make the final decision before both of the girls are at each other’s throats.
You choose to...?
