Chapter 6

Where is this going?
Next Day at Beacon, no body's aware of the change.
Ruby and her team were slow to wake. For some reason, they each had pretty rough nights, not that they made any effort to draw attention to it.
Recalling, Ruby thought she had dreamt about something involving Roman Torchwick. That made sense, of course; they had gone to the trouble of hunting him down and preventing another one of his plans just yesterday.
Why had they bothered to do that? It just seemed like so much work, just to stop a bad guy. That probably explained why they were so exhausted; they had clearly worn themselves out with that enterprise.
Working on routine, Ruby rose and made to get ready for the day. She thought about all the stuff she was bound to learn; about being a huntress, how to fight the Grimm and stop bad guys: the idea of it made her yawn.
She may have been up for it any other day, but she wasn't feeling it this morning. She could pretend to be sick, she thought. That would probably end up being more taxing, though.
The others were getting up and were having the same inner thoughts as Ruby herself. However, none of them were being voiced, so, as far as they all knew, everything was normal, and they were just having an off day.
Having breakfast in the dining hall, the RWBY and JNPR clique met up in their usual spots to eat.
Same old Nora being excited about the pancakes available, as they had been off the menu for a while. Same old Pyrrha, pining over Jaune and keeping herself reserved and polite. However, much like RWBY, they had gone through an identical change. Alas, they were not immediately noticeable, nor were they voiced aloud, so no one had a clue.
They just sat, had the occasional morning conversation.
When Jaune asks, "So, how did it go, last night?"
"How did what go?" Ruby asked, not really knowing what thing he was referring to.
"You know. T- The whole Stopping Roman Torchwick thing?" said Jaune, unaware that everyone at the table, except Ren, had grimaced.
"Oh. That. Did we tell you about that? Eh. I guess it was... fine. We stopped him, I guess."
All the girls just sat uncomfortably eating their food. The idea of stopping a bad guy was not usually a sour subject but, today, it was not something that any of them wanted to be talking about.
"Isn't that good? You stopped him from committing a crime. You'll catch him soon enough," Jaune continued.
"Why would we want to stop him?" Blake said, entering the conversation, after listening for too long.
"Wha-?" Jaune just got out.
"We don't care what he does," said Yang.
"We don't care what anyone does," said Weiss.
"We aren't going to get in the way of his plans," said Ruby, pouting and crossing her arms.
Before anyone could respond to that, there's a loud clattering behind the group and they all turned to see that Velvet had dropped her tray. Clutching onto Velvet's rabbit ears, however, was the hand of Cardin Winchester.
"Same as usual, there, I guess," muttered Jaune.
What was different, however, is that Velvet seemed even more passive than usual. Not just passive, but apathetic, as though she had relented to the situation completely.
Not only that, but Cardin was doing this in direct eye shot of Coco Adel. She would typically be the first to get heated and defend her meek teammate. Yet, on today of all days, she was just staring up at the encounter plainly. She didn't even make any move to stop eating.
Jaune thought he could hear Cardin saying, "Hey guys, look. She's just letting me do it now."
Another one of Team CDNL said, "Wha-? Learning your place, Faunus?"
Velvet responded, "Yeah. Sure. Whatever. "
Cardin asked, "You aren't gonna stop us?"
"No. Do what you want?"
"Yo! Coco. Your girlfriend just gave me permission to keep bullying her. Any thoughts on that?"
Coco responded between bites, "You heard her: She doesn't want to interfere with your wrongdoing. Neither do I."
Jaune could just about hear Cardin say, "I don't know what's going on today, but I like it."
Jaune turned to those on the table.
"Guys, are you just going to sit around and let him do that to Velvet?"
"Of course," all the girls said in unison.
"We wouldn't want to interfere in his wrongdoing," Weiss said.
"Yes," Pyrrha chimed in, "he should be allowed to do bad things without us getting in the way."
"Exactly," Yang agreed.
"These pancakes are really good today," Nora added.
For the first time that day, the girls felt the ghost of a smile appear on their lips, as they knew that they weren't interfering in anyone's wrongdoing. It felt good not to interfere in anyone's wrongdoing. Since it felt bad to interfere in any wrongdoing, logically, it must feel good to allow the wrongdoing.
"Blake!" Jaune was **** for at least one normal response, "He's picking on a faunus. Doesn't that make you mad? What if he picked on you?"
Blake suddenly thought about it and smiled abashedly.
"I wouldn't interfere and let him pick on me. It would feel so good to allow his wrongdoing firsthand."
"Why do you keep saying wrongdoing, all of a sudden? What is wrong with you all? What is going on today!!!" Jaune yelled.
Do we continue this scene?
