Naked but Accomplished

Naked, humiliated, Peter carried the last bag to the curb. His mother had insisted. It was, after all, garbage day, and she was taking no chances in him not fulfilling his duty. Strangely, although people had passed him by as he did his chore, nobody said anything disparaging about his state of dress. The closest thing that happened was when old Mrs. Witherton walked by with her dog, Chucky.

"Keep up the good work!" she said encouragingly as she passed by the house.

That was it. It didn't matter that he was buck naked. It didn't matter that he no longer owned a stitch of clothing. What mattered to the world was that he did the tasks on the list.

"I checked off that you finished your task, honey," his mother said as he walked back into the house, head held low, "on your thingie upstairs. I know you've been working hard, so I thought I'd help you out."

"Thanks, I guess," he said, mounting the stairs to his bedroom to find out what the next ring of hell would look like, "Let me know if you find Uncle Larry's phone number!"

"Will do," she called back, "Once I'm done my paperwork I'll see if I can't find it."
