Xander's mother sat down in the ray of sunlight next to his bed. Her pink hair was glowing.

"You might have wondered why I am Japanese with natural pink hair. You see I tell everyone who asks I dye it, but in truth when someone in our family reaches their 18th birthday a change happens."

She paused for effect as if talking about puberty for him.

"It's a good change, but can be scary. You will become a Japanese Anime protagonist. Our family has been cursed like this for as long as we know."

Zander stared in shock.

"The genre appears to be picked at random for each individual," she continued, "I am an international pop idol, while your uncle is a mecha pilot fighting Kaiju in East Africa for the military."
