Chapter 2
by Cirrus
The next day...
Mike asks for help
The next day, Mike couldn't shake the lingering thoughts about the rings. He tossed and turned all night, pondering the shopkeeper's words and the potential of what he had purchased. The rational part of his mind insisted it was all nonsense, yet a small spark of hope kept him curious. As he sat at his desk, the velvet pouch nestled safely in his pocket, he found his thoughts drifting to Shannon.
Shannon had been a friend and confidante for years. They shared a comfortable camaraderie, built on countless shared lunches and deep conversations. Mike admired her resilience, especially after her recent divorce. Despite the challenges she faced, Shannon maintained her natural charm and warmth. He had always been attracted to her, but their friendship had never crossed the line into something more. Mike feared that making a move might jeopardize what they had.
As the lunch hour approached, Mike decided to act on impulse. He walked over to Shannon's desk, trying to ignore the flutter of nerves in his stomach. "Hey, Shannon," he greeted with a smile. "Feel like grabbing lunch today?"
Shannon looked up from her computer, her blue eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Sure, Mike. I could use a break."
They made their way to their usual lunch spot, a cozy café just around the corner from their office. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods filled the air as they settled into a quiet corner booth. Mike fidgeted with the edge of his menu, gathering the courage to share his bizarre experience from the previous day.
"So," Mike began after they had ordered, "I had a pretty strange adventure yesterday."
Shannon raised an eyebrow, her interest piqued. "Oh? Do tell."
Mike took a deep breath and recounted his visit to the mysterious store, the eccentric wizard, and the pair of rings he had impulsively bought. As he spoke, Shannon listened intently, her expression shifting from amusement to intrigue.
"Magic rings that make people fall in love with each other?" Shannon repeated, a skeptical smile playing on her lips. "Sounds like something out of a fairy tale."
"I know it sounds crazy," Mike admitted, pulling the velvet pouch from his pocket and placing it on the table. "But I couldn't help myself. I bought them."
Shannon leaned closer, curiosity gleaming in her eyes as Mike opened the pouch to reveal the rings. "They're beautiful," she remarked, picking up the engagement ring and examining it. "But do you really believe they work?"
Mike shrugged, feeling a bit foolish. "I'm not sure. Part of me thinks it's all a scam, but what if it's not? What if there's a chance they could actually help me find someone?"
Shannon's gaze softened. "You've never been one to believe in magic, Mike. What's really going on?"
He hesitated, struggling to find the right words. "I guess I'm just tired of being alone," he confessed. "I thought...maybe these rings could be a way to change that."
Shannon nodded, understanding his vulnerability. "So, what do you want to do with them?"
Mike's heart pounded as he approached the crux of his plan. "I was hoping you could help me," he said, his voice tinged with uncertainty. "I don't have the guts to give this to a woman myself. It's too embarrassing. But maybe you could...find someone you think might be a good match for me?"
Shannon looked at him, her expression unreadable. "You want me to give this ring to someone else?"
"Yes," Mike replied, feeling a rush of relief at having said it out loud. "I trust you, Shannon. You know me better than anyone. And I just—" He faltered, then continued, "I don't want to mess this up. If you find someone who might be right for me, maybe this crazy idea will actually work."
Shannon studied the ring, then looked back at Mike. "Alright," she said slowly. "I'll help you. But you have to promise me one thing."
"Anything," Mike said eagerly.
"Don't get your hopes too high," she warned gently. "Magic or not, love doesn't come from a ring. It comes from here." She placed a hand over her heart.
Mike nodded, grateful for her support. "I understand. Thank you, Shannon. Really."
He took the male wedding band and slipped it onto his ring finger, the cool metal feeling foreign and significant. "My future is in your hands," he said with a nervous chuckle.
Shannon smiled, a hint of affection in her eyes. "I'll do my best, Mike. Let's see where this adventure takes us."
As they finished their lunch, Mike couldn't help but feel a mixture of apprehension and hope. The rings might be just a fanciful dream, but with Shannon's help, he was willing to take a chance on the magic they promised.
