Chapter 15 by Zingiber Zingiber

Who do you join to help with making the hoops?

Making hoops with Susan Quaffle

You're a little surprised to see that it's Susan Quaffle at the hoops table, busy to the elbows with forming and binding the hoops for the other scholars. Her sleeves are rolled back, and a white scar traces up one forearm. It looks like she must have taken a deep slash to that arm. Her dull brassy hair, pulled back by an awkwardly tied cord, shines in the sun slanting over the yard. And there's something about her face ... oh, her freckles are mirrored, left to right. A peculiar cosmetic affectation, if that's what it is, something you could easily reproduce with a glamour or a tiny transformation. But why?

"Oh hello Tess," Susan says. "You'll have to wait a bit if you want a hoop, I have my hands full."

A few first-year scholars are at the table waiting for Susan to help them with getting their hoops securely in shape and trued-up to a circular form to join the others rolling up and down the lawn in mesmerizing rhythmic patterns.

"Can I help with the hoops?" you ask.

"That would be WONDERFUL, Tess," Susan says.

Roll: ⚂⚄ + 3 = 11. Susan is happy for your help and would be pleased to hear if there's something she can do for you.
