Neither of them planned it, and Lux certainly didn’t want it, but at this point it doesn’t matter what either of them wants. Even as Lux makes her way back to collect her payment, nature is taking its course in her belly. What few remedies she might have been able to resort to pass her by, because it never even occurs to her. Even by the time it’s far too late, when she starts to feel tired and nauseous, it takes a while for the full, horrible realisation to slowly dawn.

Five months later, she stands in front of a cracked mirror in an inn room, her hand resting on the now-undeniable bump. It already looks so big, she wonders if she’s carrying twins. Her always over-large breasts have grown even more burdensome, her treacherous body proudly advertising her shame to the world. She feels the scorn of every stranger who looks her way and sees a whore, a fiendish temptress, who’s finally got what she deserved.

No matter how she racks her brain, she can’t think of how it happened – of who the father might be. She thought she’d been so careful. But no matter how – no matter who – she is alone to deal with the consequences. With months more of this to go, and no idea what the future will hold from the moment her labour begins – if she even gets to have a future…
