Chapter 89 by SmallestStories SmallestStories

What is happening ?

Let's ask her.

You walked up to her, leaning against the balcony's railing too, looking at the night sky, before finally asking.

"What's wrong, Rei ? It's the first time I see you looking like that..."

She answered by sighing, before leaning against you, resting her head on your shoulder, something that you never seen her do like that. When you glanced at Rei, her face looked both thoughtful and a bit depressed. After a little while of just staying there, her head laying on your shoulder while you weren't moving at all, she decided to say.

"I miss my family..." She started, her voice reflecting her emotionnal state perfectly. "I have never been far from my home for so long before, and I want to go check on them... But I don't know if I'll be able to do so with everything that we have to do..."

Her words lighted up something in your heart. After all, you also missed your family, and even if you didn't remember them at all, you knew they were in your world, living their life, while you wouldn't ever be able to see them again. Maybe you will remember them, but you already knew that this would only make worse the feeling that you were missing them. You knew how important a family was to anyone, and the thought of not being able to see your own family was something that weighed more on you the more time you spent thinking about it. That is why you decided yourself on something, before telling Rei.

"In that case, I'll help you to go back to your home for a while. After all, you got to make sure your parents are all right."

She lifted her head when you said this, her eyes looking deep inside of yours, sparks of hope inside of them when she asked.

"Really ? You would do this for me ?"

"Yeah." You simply replied, before adding. "I want to do my best at helping you, Douma, and every other girl get to their family if possible, since family is one of the most important things in one's life."

Rei had no words to reply with, so instead she just hugged you tight, while saying.

"Thank you so much, Adam... You don't even know how much that makes me happy."

Well... You could guess, since her tail was wagging pretty wildly now, but you said nothing about that, instead just lightly hugging her back, not saying a word to let this sweet moment go on for a while. When you felt Rei's hug progressively get weaker, you stopped hugging her as well, before the both of you separated. That's when the cold air of the night hit you both, making only you shiver, not Rei, yet she understood that you maybe had to go back inside.

And that's what you did, getting back inside of the manor, and while you walked to Rei's room, she asked you hesitantly.

"Tell me, Adam, would you mind if.... We got going tomorrow ? I can't wait to see them again."

"I don't mind it at all." You almost instantly replied with a shrug. "I'll try to convince both Shirayuki and Kogai to let us go. And I mean, they will surely understand how important your family is for you."

Right after you finished talking, the both of you stopped in front of Rei's door, which she opened, before waving goodbye at you, letting you some time to wave back before she closed the door. She looked far more energetic than when you were back on the balcony, that's for sure.

As for you, you got back to your own room, closing the door behind you and hoping that this time nothing strange would wake you up and drag you across the forest to lose you before giving you a gift that you won't really understand on the spot... That's still a crazy story when you thought about it while preparing to go to bed.

Despite this thought in your mind, you couldn't help but think about how you'll try to convince your demon and kitsune friends, considering that your training was still one of the highest priorities, even for you. But you weren't worrying about it, after all, they wouldn't do anything bad to you nor to Rei even if they don't want the both of you to go, that is something that you knew.

This train of thought occupied your brain for a long time, while slumber slowly claimed you, making you drift in a peaceful sleep...

Next day, next thing.
