Sink / Buried

"What's the matter, Urwana?" Emmanuel rested his hand lightly on the surface of the brown pile, which wiggled happily in response.
"Meep..." the earth elemental exuded the sound from between the fissures in its earthen body.
"It's this place, isn't it? I can tell it doesn't have enough earth mana, and it's making you sick. Don't worry," Emmanuel placed a wedge from a red apple inside the pile, which immediately started to turn brown and spotty before turning into a fluid, "we will start moving soon, and our destination will be full of residual earth mana. You can hold out until then, can't you?"
"Meep!" The pile exuded happily and wiggled.
"That's my elemental spirit. Now come on!" Emmanuel extended his hand, and the elemental slithered up his arm before sitting down on the mage's shoulder over his cloak.
Right now however, Urwana didn't want to move to somewhere with higher residual mana. They wanted to stay. They didn't want to follow Emmanuel to the people the monsters he was told he had to kill. They didn't hurt anyone, and even if they did... couldn't they resolve it differently?

They remember when they first met him. Nine year old Emmanuel was out playing in the Urwaine Woods, when he accidentally stepped on what he thought was a big pile of animal dropping... until it slithered away. Since then the boy kept coming back to the forest to play with his new friend. As time passed by however, the rumours spread, and one day a middle aged man in fancy black and purple robes followed by two armoured men interrupted his class. He asked the teacher if he could speak with Emmanuel in private.
As it turned out, he was a bishop responsible for assembling the Order of the Chief God's armed forces, and he had heard of a young boy who had earned the trust of an earth elemental. He had told him that earth elementals are objects of powerful magic, born not from a mother but from elemental mana condensed at locations where it is abundant. Elemental mana is a type of magical energy that permeates the very landscapes themselves, but is fundamentally inaccessible to humans; but if someone was to gain influence over this repertoire of magic through a contract with an elemental spirit, they would become nigh invincible.
Emmanuel was offered the opportunity to use this power to serve the Chief God's will in her struggle to banish monsters to oblivion.

And so began his tireless training to become an elemental mage that only ended when he was 18. When the spirit heard him cite the oath that he had been taught which would create a pact and bind themself to him, they were completely ecstatic. They would follow him everywhere, and they granted him access to cast magic to shape the very earth beneath his feet.
But when he learned how he used this power; as a weapon, against those deemed monsters by his own church... a seed of hesitation was planted in their heart.
Although that seed was never any kind of obstruction against their admiration for Emmanuel, they finally blossomed shortly after their last mission a week ago. Their objective was to drive away a succubus who had infiltrated a nearby settlement. They succeeded without any issue, but Urwana was struck by a magical projectile the demoness tossed at them. Ever since then, the idea of the suffering and **** they caused both terrified and disgusted Urwana... but they knew Emmanuel wasn't a bad person.... right?

The corrupting miasma that is the Dark God's cult had infested an abandoned cathedral in the forest, originally erected to commemorate the Chief God. That sham had been going on long enough now, and Emmanuel had been sent by the church to tear the cathedral itself to the ground and bury everyone inside alive under its rubble.
Emmanuel positioned himself about a hundred meters away from the entrance, opened his book up as he knelt down and spoke his incantation.

"evkarte siplis ervab phon mar!" Emmanuel felt his mind becoming one with the earth, wielding it like a warrior does his blade. He imagined lashing at the cathedral like he would a whip, unleashing a devastating earthquake at the spot before him; one powerful enough to level the very stone walls of the structure.
The ground did tremble, but not so much as to put even a crack on the wall. Something went wrong with his spell. Did he misspeak the incantation? He flipped through the book and scanned through the pages. There was no mistake.
He could feel the abundance of earth mana in the landscape, so he knew he had enough power for the spell.
Was it something with him perhaps? Since Emmanuel completed his training he had become preoccupied with his newfound status and society; neglecting his exercises. Had his fundamental skills dulled to the point of failing him?
Now was not the time to ruminate on this. The dark priests inhabiting the fallen cathedral had seized their orgy and ran out, finding Emmanuel standing in the open.
"Get him!"
"Let's go Urwana! This is not a favourable development!"
"Meep!" The earth elemental meeped as Emmanuel ran.

This would be the first time he failed his mission... And because his spell fizzled. Such an embarrassment would surely be a black mark on his record, but right now he had to escape.
Being werewolves and minotaurs amongst them they were dashing towards him at reckless speeds, but Immanuel was able to keep up with him. His pact with an earth elemental granted him great mana production, so with physical abilities alone he could keep up with monsters.

However the succubi did overtake him and landed before the earth mage, blocking his path. The werewolves formed a perimeter around him while the minotaur approached from behind.

"You are guilty of having trespassed on our sacred grounds with intent of felling lives." The succubus in black gown and wrapped in chains said, "Fear not, however. The Dark God is a loving God. A forgiving God. If you will just accompany the lot of us in a feast of the flesh back in the cathedral, then all shall be forgiven!"
Emmanuel unsheathed his sword, "Your wicked ways are not welcome here! Begone from the sight of pious orderites and return from the dark caves whence you crawled out!"
"Meep!"
"Don't worry Urwana, I've got a plan. I'll make them sink to the very heart of the ground, crushing them beneath the earth's very crust and have them suffocate in their own graves. If they think they will lay a hand on my Urwana they are sorely mistaken!"
"Meep..."
Emmanuel extends his hand towards the succubus dark priest, "Ahglam eb naarpis!"

The earth gripped Emmanuel's feet and pulled him down.
"What the hell!?" Emmanuel had sunk into the ground to the point only his neck was protruding. This kind of inaccuracy could not be the result of poor form. This basic spell was performed flawlessly, and as long as Urwana did their part... if Urwana did their part...
"Urwana? Did... did you betray me?"
"Meep!" The earth elemental now face to face with Emmanuel wiggled happily.
"Wh-why? I thought you were my friend!"
The pile of earth ballooned into a mass of interlinked orbs that merged into each other, morphing into the form of a naked, curvy woman with skin as brown as the earth. Emmanuel's eyes were about to pop out as he beheld the gorgeous woman now accompanied by the Dark God's cultists behind her. "...we are more than friends.... I would like us to be... but you... you have betrayed yourself by spilling blood so carelessly... I shall save you... save you from the life you never wished for..."
"...Urwana?" that magical attack from the succubus a week ago... it transformed her. Elemental spirits are **** to the corroding mana that monsters contain. It changes them, turns them into monsters as well... but... was she right? It didn't use to be about dominating monsters. It wasn't about following the orders of the higher ups in the Chief God's church. Before it was only about Emmanuel and Urwana.

"Urwana... I'm..."
Urwana knelt down and held his cheeks in her strong but gentle palms"...do not speak... you do not need to... I understand... " with her new lips Urwana gave Emmanuel a kiss on his forehead, "...but now that I have a body of flesh... I will have the needs of the flesh..."

"Oh... oh! Wait but..."
"Oh, you do not wish to join her outside wedlock?" The dark priest said, stroking her staff, "Despair not, for performing the rite of marriage there is no simpler task. " The dark priest drew a cross with her open hand, "In the name of the Dark God, I declare you husband and wife. Now walk together in her eternal darkness, and embrace the love and passion you feel for one another!"
"But don't I get to..." Emmanuel's words were interrupted as he sunk deeper into the ground, before he was swallowed by the earth entirely.
"...thank you." The monsterized earth elemental spirit said as she let herself sink down with him, to join him in everlasting lovemaking.

The End!
