Chapter 5 by airwreck airwreck

What happened next?

Jonathan revealed more about the Priapus Program.

Jonathan looked at his phone to distract himself while his mother chatted with Julie about her grandfather having a harem, ignoring their occasional glances at him.

"We're going live in five... four... three..." a stagehand counted down, giving Julie ample time to turn her microphone back on and straighten her dress.

"And we're back with Jonathan Lee -- Navy SEAL, ER doctor, and astronaut!" Julie announced to the clapping of the studio audience. "Before the break, Jon revealed that he would be one of thirteen crew members of the Priapus Program -- the other twelve are all women!"

The studio audience clapped.

"All of the 2000 applicants had to meet NASA's stringent requirements," Jonathan smiled. "Much more strict than applying to your show. No offense!"

"None taken!" Julie laughed.

The studio audience laughed.

"The potential candidates had to be American citizens, 25 to 35-years-old, and with at least a bachelor's degree in a STEM field, such as engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, and mathematics, or the health sciences," Jonathan explained. "The crew members will have least one project of their own to work on while working on the overall mission objectives of the Priapus Program."

"What will you be studying and experimenting?" Julie asked.

"Like other analog missions that will prepare us for near-term and future explorations to the Moon, Mars, and the asteroids, the crew of the Priapus Program will study a wide variety of things but mostly focus on the health of the human body -- such as cardiovascular, neuroscience, exercise, and nutrition -- and behavioral effects -- such as isolation and confinement, team dynamics, and mental fatigue."

"So is this going to be done is space?" Julie wondered.

"As much as I would love to be on the International Space Station, the Priapus Program will be a ground-based simulation of life on a generation ship because of the limitation of time, equipment, manpower, and especially money. For example, NASA had paid about $86 million for each of its astronauts to be onboard Russia's three-person Soyuz spacecraft to the ISS but about almost half on private rockets."

"That's a lot of money!"

"Yeah, spending three-quarters of billion dollars to send thirteen people to space is very expensive," Jonathan chuckled. "So as you can see that ground-based analog studies are much less expensive!"

"So if you're not going to be on the space station then where will you be?" Julie inquired.

"We will be in an undisclosed government science research facility," Jonathan answered with a smirk. "Sorry, if I tell you exactly where it is then I have to kill everyone here!"

"And we know you can!" Julie laughed, pointing her fingers like a gun at the audience.

The studio audience laughed.

"How long will you be in this secret government facility?" Julie asked.

"Two years," Jonathan answered.

"That's a very long time!"

"Yes, other analog psychosocial isolation experiments typically lasted up to one year, however, the third stage of the MARS-500 experiment was 520 days!"

Julie looked directly into a camera. "When we return after the break we will meet the rest of the crew of the Priapus Program!"
