Jackie plays a game

Jackie heated up some leftover pasta and brought it up to her room. She still had some dailies left to do in Mage Maker Online. She was slightly surprised to find a new patch but it wasn't that big and it gave her time to eat. She went over the patch notes and discovered a whole slew of features. There were a bunch of new content and bosses added and a new voice commands feature.

Who in their right mind thought voice commands was a good idea in an MMO, Jackie thought to herself. How are you supposed to talk in voice chat with other players if everyone is screaming random spells all the time. She paused, slightly chagrined with herself, Not that I ever voice chat with anyone anyway.

Jackie was really good at Mage Maker. Actually she was the best player. In the world. By quite a wide margin. The thing that set Mage Maker Online apart from every other MMO was that you didn't have to create new characters when you wanted to try a new class. All you had to do was start training in that class. However there was a catch - each new class you learned significantly reduced the amount of experience points you got from the monsters and bosses. Currently the person who had achieved the second most number of spells had maxed out three of the 15 classes, was about 80% of the way through five others, and was under half way through unlocking the rest.

Jackie had maxed everything. This was mostly due to her having copious amounts of free time as well as instantly knowing the most efficient way to grind experience in each zone. Now with this new patch she would probably spend the next week learning each new spell for her character. Her favorite class was the divinity class as they had the most powerful spells, although you could not use them too frequently as they used up a lot of mana. She decided to start there and began progressing through the new divinity section of the game.

By the time Jackie had beaten the area boss, she had already maxed out her divinity level. Being the first to kill the boss granted her a special unique item. She had gotten these a few times before but this one was different. Usually these unique items were just cosmetic so that the player base didn't object to any boosting or snowballing effect for players who were already at the top. This time however it was a scroll.

"That's new," Jackie said to her empty room. She examined the scroll and found it was a legendary spell. She was excited now. The devs had been hinting about something like this for a while and apparently she was going to be the first person to get one! As she activate the scroll, a window popped up informing her that this part was voice command only. With a groan, Jackie turned on her her mic and read the words on her screen.

"Ainth Oaol Mythnera Sverteth Kamineth."

The usually more muted colors of the game were abruptly replaced by a brilliant white and yellow flash. Jackie flinched away and blinked her eyes to get the spots out of her eyes. Almost instantly her eyes adjusted and she looked back at the screen only to find the text Transference Complete. Please click to continue. She hesitantly clicked her mouse and the game disappeared only to be replaced by her desktop background

"The fuck...?" Jackie whispered to herself. She reopened the game and it loaded up with her right where she had left off. She collected the rest of her loot and went back to the hub area. The crash didn't bother her too much, bugs were bound to happen in game, but she could not find the new spell she had supposedly learned from the scroll. Glancing at the time she saw that she had a few hours left before she needed to sleep so she started on the Shadow magic path.

That was when she discovered another bug. None of her keybindings for spells were working. She tried rebinding them, she tried restarting the game, she even tried restarting the whole computer and she still couldn't activate a single ability. Finally Jackie tried the only option left to her and toggled the voice command option on. I feel like an idiot talking to a stupid game like this. she thought. Approaching the first area, Jackie said, "Invlaseara." It was a simple stealth spell that was supposed to render her character invisible. Jackie yelped as she saw both of her own hands disappear with her character. Looking down, she saw that the rest of her was likewise invisible.

She whispered "Invlaseara" again and reappeared. Her in-game character also reappeared and was immediately beset by enemies in game but Jackie was a little preoccupied at the moment. She alt tabbed out of the game and went to the Mage Maker wikia page, specifically the spells section and found the incantation for a simple illumination spell.

"Listra,"She almost hissed out with a hand outstretched and a small sphere of white light appeared in her palm.

"Holy shit!" Jackie exclaimed before repeating the incantation to put out the light.

She thought for a minute then went back to the wikia and memorize the incantation of every spell in the Divinity class.

Then the shadow class.

Then the elemental class.

and the Demonic, Aether, Chaos, Spacial, Natural, Alchemical, Martial, Protection, Mental, Fey, Necromantic, and Draconic, classes after that.

Jackie mulled over in her mind what to do next. She supposedly had the ability to play with the very fabric of existence now but she didn't want to push her luck tonight. She decided to sleep for a few hours and then begin experimenting at school the next day.

As she rolled into bed Jackie thought to herself, Tomorrow is either going to be the most disappointing or more interesting day of my life.
