Chapter 3

How does patrol go?
It's goes well as first days go.
Emid begins the patrol and is nervous for his first day but knows what he is meant to do. Sebo comes across an elven servant who had her foot stuck under a shelf. They were able to tilt the shelf and get her foot out. She thanked them and Sebo asked her to explain herself.
Elf girl: “I was using a stool to retrieve the box on top of the shelf, but it was heavy so I lost my balance with the box overhead. When I fell my foot slid underneath the edge and I could get out.”
Sebo: “What is your name? I will have to report the incident, but also tell me your supervisor? I want to add a recommendation they send someone larger to retrieve heavy boxes off high shelves next time.”
Elf girl: “My name is Kime. I report to Miss Perinoup, the tutor.” She was nervous and Miss Perinoup had a reputation for being strict so Sebo immediately understood. Emid had heard rumors but she wasn’t a popular topic among the guard because the captain, Princess Fani, hated her.
Sebo: “alright Kime, I’ll smooth things over with Miss Perinoup, I think you should go with Emid here to the infirmary to treat that ankle.”
Sebo wondered why old Perinoup had an assistant. As he understood her job had been to tutor the three princesses and now she was just something of an absent advisor to the Queen. The kind of no-show job that comes with having personally provided extensive services for royals. It was a bit rare for elves in this part of the world to get no-show jobs for human royalty. However Miss Perinoup had achieved that. She had worked in other Kingdoms and built up a great reputation over her long elven life. In actuality, the Queen had kept her around for help rearing her grandchildren, especially if they were as willful as her daughters.
Emid took Kime to the infirmary where an assistant took her and started to apply ice as Eso recited what ingredients to mix for a topical pain treatment. Emid saw a familiar face, his sister’s best friend, the younger daughter of the Benfar noble family, Kari. Kari must have just started in the infirmary because she was the same age and they attended the same core classes through their schooling in the castle. In fact, they would often study together in the library along with Kimi, the Deno heiress, and Jok who was part of a noble family near the city gate. Emid was good friends with Kimi and had much in common with Jok. But perhaps this was a chance to get to know Kari better. Kari gave the ointment to Eso and Eso started applying it.
Emid: “Greetings Kari. Did you just begin your apprenticeship?”
Kari: “Yes it is. I enjoy working with your sister, she is very pleasant company.”
Emid: “Perhaps we can celebrate our first day this evening?”
Kari: “Sorry, I already have plans with your sister. Can I ask you a favor on our day off?”
Emid: “Sure, what do you need?”
Kari: “My mother got me an extra mixing set to practice at home. I suspect she has ulterior motives, but I enjoy practicing my herbology. I need to gather some ingredients from near the lake by the wheat fields and I was wondering if you could help me. Besides, you studied toxins, which is the inverse to herbology. I would like to learn since I think it will improve my understanding.”
Emid: “I can help you gather herbs but maybe you should ask my sister for help studying. She is very good at toxins. She taught herself at the library, but she really knows more than I do.”
Kari: “Emid, I think you misunderstood, I wanted to learn the theory and how to handle them. I don’t think Eso has handled many toxins. Besides she mentors me every other day of the week and we are best friends so we spend time together after work. I can’t remember the last evening she wasn’t at the manor for dinner.”
Emid: “Oh, that makes sense. I would be delighted to help you.”
Eso from across the room: “Kime seems to be ready to go. Are you going to escort her Emid?”
Emid approaches Eso and Kime: “yes, yes. I will make sure she makes it back ok.”
Emid and Kime departed. Emid didn’t know where Miss Perinoup’s study was located but Kime showed him. He continued along the patrol route at a quick pace to find Sebo. Upon finding him, Sebo suggested lunch in the mess hall.
In the mess hall, Emid saw his old teacher Miss Monto. Her family must have come from Finfar at some point. She was very attractive woman with black hair and dark eyes. She was curvy but fit. Sebo was joking with one of the old stable hands so Miss Monto sat by Emid.
Monto: “How is it going so far?”
Emid: “Great! How’s the new class?”
Monto: "Rowdy, but I can get them under control.”
Emid: “Sounds like it may be rough for a bit.”
Monto: “Emid, that’s just how it goes. I actually wanted to ask if I could treat you to a pint at the Dandy Rambler?”
Emid: “Really?”
Monto: “Yes. You were a great student. You put the work in when you needed to and I didn’t have much time to help you since the nobility is clear I am there to teach their children and shouldn’t waste time with the couple commoners who happen to reside in the castle. I wanted to see if there was anything yu felt unprepared for during your trials for assignment.”
Emid: “You did fine. I understand our standing in society. Besides, I thought you had a husband?”
Monto: “Yes, but he’s in Nantia with his boss for work. I’m just asking you about your school experience, so don’t get the wrong idea.”
Emid blushed and replied “yes ma’am. I would be delighted to join you.” Miss Monto smiled, ppartly because she was going to get feedback from one of her few commoner students but mostly because she noticed Emid blushing and thought it was cute.
The afternoon was uneventful. He did pick up a repaired shield from the blacksmith for Sebo and noticed the elven assistant staring at him strangely. He couldn’t figure out why. The blacksmith was berating his apprentice. The apprentice hadn’t been there long. She must have worked at a forge in the city previously since she just kind of showed up one day. Emid asked the elf where she lived in the castle. She juts pointed at the blacksmith’s door. Emid asked if she lived in the same room. The elf said “no, we built a wall so the smith lives in the main living are at the back and I have a small room at the door”. Emid thought that was a strange arrangement but knew that some made their chamber servants just sleep on the floor out of the way, so that seemed an improvement.
Where does Emid go after work?
