Chapter 4 by Mike the Red Mike the Red

Isn't the Breakup Over Yet?

With an impotent squeal, I shook the envelope, as though doing so would magically make this damned breakup, which had taken, literally, everything from me, somehow end faster. Because, one does not break up with Derrick Julius Magnus Montgomery, the First, in a normal, civil manner. No, instead, The Asshole changes all the locks, moves all the money from the shared accounts, and slams you with a lawsuit. The rat bastard didn't even let me in to get my clothes and toiletries until I hired my own lawyer. And then, I was **** move them to a storage unit and sleep in my coworker's living room, because I didn't have the down payment for a new apartment!

Nearly knocking my coffee over, save for the special anti-spill mug that my boss has gotten me, and conspicuously only me, I slammed The Asshole's paperwork in the top drawer of my desk, knowing that it wasn't really gone, but needing it out of sight while I had a moment to calm down.

As I crammed the last of the sandwich crackers in my mouth and washed it down with coffee, I noticed the last thing from the the mail room, a post card showing a beautiful beach covered with gleaming white sand.

Eagerly, I turned the postcard over to see the giant red mail forwarding stamp slammed across the back, as though The Asshole had conspired to marr the precious postcard from my little sister.

Despite the overstamp blurring a bit of the text, I was still able to read, "Greatings From Mexico, Big Lexi!" a nickname that only my little sister dared use. "Baja California is amazing! I wish you could be here instead of that stodgy office in New York! The girls and I ate at this place with iguanas and chameleons and monkeys that would try to take stuff from you! They even tried to steal my shiny new belly ring! (Don't tell mom and dad!) Eternal love, your baby sis, Mira!"

The card brought more joy than I'd felt since long before the divorce. My little sister, partying with her friends at a beach house in Mexico, courtesy of one of the rich girl's parents, just for graduating high school. I hadn't had such luck back in my day, but The Asshole had taken me to several nice resorts when first started dating; if only the relationship had lasted past that phase.

The comment about not telling or parents was typical of Mira. Though the thought of getting a piercing gave me the willies, it didn't seem so surprising from my outgoing, fearless little sister.

I smiled at the rush of a hundred fond memories I shared with my sister, despite our age gap, after all, she wasn't even nineteen and I was... shit, I was turning twenty-seven next week... on the day I was supposed to show up to court to finalize the divorce. Fuck, what a way to spoil a birthday.

I just sighed and buried myself in my latest assignment, hoping that things would get better someday.
