When Size Matters Most
Sometimes, as social norms change, the rules making up social contracts change with them. The various amendments, additions, and deletions made implicitly by the masses’ acceptance generally tend to serve the purpose of keeping society going in a direction the majority of people can tolerate without dissolving the whole thing and starting over from scratch. But that’s not how these kinds of rules came to be.
Somehow, for some reason, a new rule has been introduced into the fabric of human consciousness. Now, society operates with an additional rule that functions essentially as a tier list. Those on the top have to be obeyed, and those below them have to listen.
