What do you do?
Inspect the unidentified flying object.
It looks like a bowl made from complex, intricately assembled plates and patterns that surely have meaning, though look to be random to the untrained eye. There's a single blue light on the front, similar to the other automatons. Below it, you realize there are two more floating objects that can best be described as metal gloves. Actually, despite the fact that you don't know if they truly are some kind of steel alloy or it's something far more arcane, they are unmistakably hands, floating apart as if belonging to an invisible person standing beneath the saucer.
Then it speaks. When it does, you realize it's the voice of a woman, though it sounds odd, as if coming through the speaker of a phone. It's electric--not difficult to understand, though certainly not as clear as one from a person's own vocal cords. "Greetings," it says. "Please do not be alarmed. I know that is a difficult ask given the danger you have faced, but you must understand that you have thus far been intruders."
The cadence is familiar. It isn't that you recognize the voice, but there's something about it. Yes, you've encountered others who speak more proper--no contractions and/or a sophisticated vocabulary--though you feel oddly confidence in your guess. "An elf?" you ask.
Amara perks up. "Interesting. You may be correct."
It's Nyllia who ponders longer. She finally responds a moment later. "I think he is."
"You are, yes," the UFO answers. "Well, as evident by what you see before you, that is only partly true. Not much remains of my body. Actually, nothing does, unless you count my core. Regardless, please follow me before you become trapped in this labyrinth for so long that you waste away, and your bones will need to be collected for disposal." It turns, and then it hovers away, around the next corner.
Niki hustles after it. "H-Hey! Is there a loot room around here somewhere? You know, maybe one with some shorts?"
The rest of the party, now with the march order scrambling, races behind as to not be left to wander the maze. Whatever this elf-like automaton may be, it hasn't tried to kill or strip anyone yet, so it's already more hospitable than anything else you've encountered.
When it turns next, it's right in the middle of a hallway. However, the section of the wall in front of it disappears, much like the fake wall Eva glitched out with her magic eater talents. Then a short walk later, it happens again. Finally, you enter a section of the maze you have a feeling would have been nearly impossible to get to otherwise.
"So this labyrinth was basically a trick," you say. "Technically possible, but unless you know the exact path to follow, no intruder is ever getting through. We would have more likely found our way back to the entrance than the exit."
"It seems that way," says Nyllia.
"But that's cheating," Niki adds.
As the floating device continues ahead, it speaks in response. "It is not cheating, as it is not meant to pose a challenge. This is not a game. It was designed to keep intruders away from the vault."
"What earned our passage through?" you ask.
"Two things," it answers. "Firstly, I believe to be quite an exceptional judge of character, and I have been watching you for some time. Secondly, you have a stel'ae amongst your numbers."
Eva points to herself. "... M-Me?" she asks nervously. "But I'm only half--"
"Half. Quarter. It does not matter. You exhibited the innate abilities of a stel'ae, so you are one. And given they have been gone for so long, imagine my surprise when I awoke to yet another trespasser, yet it was you. I have slept long. Rarely have I reactivated. And when I have, it was for no more than some thieves who would rarely even get to the entrance of the labyrinth let alone be people of interest. But now... Well, perhaps it is finally time that I do not simply deactivate again. No more sleep mode. Because after all these years, a stel'ae has appeared! They are not gone after all!"
"I didn't think a piece of metal could be cute," Niki comments.
"Or display such joy," Amara adds. "How fun."
After one final intersection, a hall leads straight forwards to a short flight of stairs at the base of a structure built right into the wall. There's a grand set of double doors protecting what you assume to be the aforementioned vault. You made it.
The UFO stops before the crack of the doorway. A tiny light shines from its lens. Then a moment later, the loud noise of a large mechanism shakes the floor, and slowly, the massive doors push open on their own, granting passage to a round and tall chamber within, filled with all sorts of different crates, chests, boxes, shelves, and more.
