Her son asks questions

Laura awoke to realize Dan had left for the day. She was in a haze as she tried to get through the day. Trying to get her mind off recent events, she checked her email. One company messaged her about declining her application. With a sigh, she sat down and started filling out more applications on her phone, as difficult as it was to do sometimes on the small screen.

"Hey, I'm home," Dan called as he came through the door.

"You're home earlier than I expected," Laura greeted with a smile. "Uh... about... last night and this morning," she started.

"You were drunk," Dan interrupted, holding up a hand to forestall her.

"I was," Laura agreed. She felt horrible about it. "I know... well... I know things have been... rather charged between us," she continued. "I wanted to say I'm sorry for that."

"Why?" he asked. He sounded taken aback.

"Well... I'm your mother, and old. Things... well..." she tried to explain, trailing off as Dan laughed.

"Mom, you certainly don't look old at all. You are my mother," he said. It took him a moment to finish his thought process. "What do you want? Rather, what do you need?"

Laura bit her lip and looked at the table. The simple answer was a hard fucking, but she couldn't say that. Dan went over to the table and sat across from her. He seemed content to let her think things through. "I just need to get a handle on my emotions," she finally said.

"What do you need?" Dan asked again. Laura sighed and struggled to answer him. "If you need sex, Amanda made it pretty clear she was interested in you last night. I think you might have gotten that if you'd stayed, awake or not," he said.

Laura bit her lip and nodded. That she hadn't blacked out on. "I've... been getting that feeling. Last night... well, I didn't think about how much I was drinking," she admitted. "It's kinda obvious she does."

Dan pulled a face. "If you need someone to hold you, and love you. Someone to be with you through thick and thin," he said as he put a hand over her hand.

Laura gulped and **** out a laugh. It sounded rough to her ears. "I can't believe..." she muttered. "I just need to calm down," she said with a smile. She looked up at him. "I need to think. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for how I acted. Can... we drop this for now?" she pleaded.

"No problem," Dan said with a sigh. "I'm cooking tonight right?"

"Please, I haven't been feeling well today."

Laura laid down while Dan cooked. He pressed her for what she did while he was at work. She felt a little guilty all she did was put in applications and go to the grocery store. She'd turned Amanda away politely and told him about it. When she felt satisfied she'd proven that she hadn't wasted her day, she asked she asked about his day.

"Oh, I need to call my boss. She said something about me maybe picking up a side job. We could use all the help we could get."

"She did, did she?" Laura asked, her eyebrows furrowing. "What did she say it was?"

"I don't know. She said I should call her after work. I suppose now is a good time."

Laura gave him a thin smile before sitting back. She wondered how things were going between them. It was obvious they were attracted to each other, as wrong as it should be.

"Is this, Ms. Carmen? It's me Dan." He paused for a moment. "Yeah, anything to make a little more money," he said.

Laura raised her eyebrow at the either intentional or unintentional suggestion.

"What did you have in mind?" he asked into the phone with a flush. "I don't have a lot of experience doing that," Dan continued.

Laura snorted listened in as Dan talked back and forth between his boss. She watched his face carefully. "Her house?" she questioned after he hung up.

"No, apparently she buys and flips houses. Has some team or something she hires out. He was looking for someone to fill a spot."

"Hmm," his mother muttered as she got up from the table. She took his plate and went over to the sink. "What do you think?"

"It could be fifteen an hour. She said maybe up to thirty if I play my cards right."

"I see."
