He and you get along well

"John, I'm so sorry." Jane says when you get home. She is still in the outfit she had worn to work that morning: a grey blouse and skirt, all business. She looks more like an accountant than a high school math teacher.

On the drive home, you had called Jane to ask her why she hadn't told you that Chet would be your new boss. She had sounded genuinely confused. Apparently, Chet had told her that he was getting a VP job at a finance startup, but that he hadn't told her the name of the company. He also hadn't mentioned anything when she told him that you work at FinSense.

"I just feel blindsided," you say when she apologizes.

"John, I swear. I would have told you if I had known."

You kiss her cheek. "I believe you."

At first, you aren't sure what to make of Chet. Because FinSense is a small company, there is not enough money in the budget to afford a data analytics department. Therefore, you work in the marketing department. Your previous boss, a fucking bitch, in your opinion, didn't know how to best leverage your analytic talents, and so, you spent most of your days wasting time.

Chet, on the other hand, seems to have had previous experience managing data analysts. He asked you difficult questions, and encouraged you to do things you didn't think were possible for you. Strangely, he made you a better data professional.

Of course, not everyone likes Chet.

Cassandra has told you on more than one occasion that she finds Chet, in her words, "slimy". You're not sure what she means by that but you also don't give her opinion much weight. She tends to be distrusting of most people she meets for the first time. In fact, you're certain that she had described you as "slimy", too, when you first met.

When you remind Cassandra of her previous distrust towards you, she shrugs. "You and him are not alike. Trust me. I know a bad person when I see one."

Other than Cassandra, though, everyone else seemed to like Chet. He was fair, smart, and humble.

The women at FinSense also noticed that Chet was more attractive than their other male co-workers. Even Cassandra had to admit as much (before apologizing to you and Zeke).

Two weeks went by before Kevin assembles everyone in the main area again. "I know that we've all been very busy these past few days. But, I want to invite you all to a small party at my house." There are a few whoops and an applause. Kevin's house has a pool. He laughs, loving the attention. "We haven't had time to celebrate Chet's arrival yet, which is a shame. The party is this Saturday at 7. Feel free to bring any friends and family."
