The morning sun was high in the sky when Gilb slithered up out of the tight underground passage he had been traversing. The small green slime had been traveling for nearly a week now in his journey to reach this valley, and for safety's sake, the going had been slow as he tried to stay out of sight. Now finally here, he took a moment to sit back and take stock of himself. If he had to quantify how he was feeling, say in the form of some arbitrary values and statistics, it would be a little something like this:

"I suppose that will have to do, for now." Gilb thought to himself.
The slime had come to Lightreach Valley for a reason. Long ago, although how long he could not say, Gilb was once a powerful sorcerer. Due to some rivals for his power, he was eventually cast down and transformed into this lowly slime. He was locked away and forgotten in some sort of suspended animation until a few weeks ago when he had awoken amidst the shattered remnants of his magical container in ancient ruins long since forgotten. It had been some sort of earthquake that had knocked his prison from its shelf and shattered it upon the ground. Fortune had smiled upon him, for that very same earthquake had created a large fissure in the walls of the ruins more than big enough for him to slither out of. Now, he had returned to where he had been defeated and cast down all those centuries ago.
"I can't believe it's still standing." Gilb scoffed to himself as he observed the large stone fortress in the distance.
Stonespire Castle was where Gilb had first learned the mysteries of the Arcane, and it had been where his rivals had deceived and destroyed him. From what he could gather, it seemed that mages still inhabited and used the old fort to train students and research new mysteries. Gilb knew that he could never return to human form, but that did not mean that his story was over. In fact, he believed that it was just beginning...
