Chapter 9 by LaoTzu LaoTzu

Why Does Gavin Care? Is Victoria a weirdo?

Gavin Shows Zero Interest in Heather

Gavin wasn't sure how to respond to Ashley's question. Really, he didn't know why he cared, either. From the corner of his eye, he noticed Chloe giving him a quizzical expression. He simply shrugged and said that he didn't really care at all. He was just trying to make conversation. Ashley and Victoria decided to accept his answer; they didn't know him well enough to question him any further. They returned to whatever they had been talking about before Chloe and Gavin had arrived.

Chloe squeezed Gavin's finger. He turned to see her glance at Heather and then back at. She wiggled her eyebrows and smiled impishly. He rolled his eyes but didn't say anything, which elicited a quiet chuckle from her.

Some time passed. Zack and Brandon had finished wrestling a while ago and decided to join the rest of their friends on the dock. Heather came around after a while. She smiled when she saw Gavin, and took a seat right beside him. She was wearing a two-piece bathing suit, and if Gavin was careful, he could peek at her cleavage without anyone noticing.

"How was your nap?" Heather asked.

Gavin wondered if he would ever hear her say that in the mornings. "Nonexistent. How was your swim?"

Heater rolled her eyes. "Good until he showed up," and she tossed her head at Kurt, who seemed to have fallen asleep, his back lying on the ground and his arms akimbo.

"I think he was pretending to read so that e could peek at the girls without anyone noticing." Gavin said.

"That's his favorite peeking method."

Before Gavin could say anything, Ashley commented on how cold it was becoming and that they ought to go back into the cabin. Someone--Victoria, maybe--asked if they should wake Kurt. "Let him sleep," was Heather's reply, and because Kurt was her cousin, no one argued.

As they shuffled back towards the cabin, Gavin looked over his shoulder. He suddenly felt kind of bad for Kurt and a part of him, however small, wanted to wake him up. But, he didn't. For a reason that he could not vocalize, he felt like he should leave Kurt alone.

The next day, when no one could find Kurt, Gavin would blame himself for the boy's disappearance.

What happened to Kurt? What does everyone think?
