Chapter 6

Fiesta en Baja California
"Alex, Alex, Alex, what do we have to do to get you to take a day off?" Darrell said, walking me from my slumber.
"Murg," I groaned in response.
"Ah, that explains everything; I'm so glad that I asked," Darrell quipped.
I used one hand to tell Darrell what I thought whilst using the other to search for my bottle of Tylenol. When I found it, I was terrified to hear no happy little bouncing of pills inside and, once opened, my fears were confirmed.
Great, just great. I had a throbbing headache, a colleague who's a, dare I say it, morning person, and I was supposed to be taking a vacation to... somewhere.
"Listen, Alex, Andrew talked to me about you taking some time off and it'll be fine. I've got you covered on the Brighton Financial case and everything else can wait. Shoot, half the office is going to be gone next week, anyway."
"Okay. Fine. I just need to make a few phone calls," I acquiesced.
"Un-uh. No you don't. Not here. You're going to take that phone of yours and you're going to make your calls from a nice park bench."
Reluctantly, I gave in to Darrel's suggestion and, after a quick stop to fill a paper cup with coffee, left the office in search of a park.
When I got to the bench, I sat and contemplated what to actually do with my vacation. The truth is, I didn't really do much outside of work and the only people I talked to were family and my, now officially, ex-asshole. So, I called the one person who could always cheer me up.
When my call was answered, there were several seconds of nothing but loud, thumping dance music before, "¡Hola, mi hermana!"
"Uh, how can you listen to that music this early in the morning?" I queried.
"What? It's like three something; of course we're partying."
Right. Because of the time difference, it wasn't six forty-eight, but three forty-eight. And, naturally, that means that my sister would still be up partying. When was the last time that I stayed up that late partying? Had I ever stayed up that late partying?
"Hey, Mira, I got your postcard and just wanted to call and see how you were doing."
"Alex, you'd love it here! There's this gorgeous sandy beach with these amazing rocks jutting up out of the water and tomorrow, these guys said that they'd take us out on their sailboat!"
"That... sounds really nice. I'm happy for you, Mira."
"Hey, you should totally come party with us! New York sucks, come to Mexico!" she said, before apparently turning away from the phone and shouting over the music, "Tiff! Can my sister come party with us?" And, a moment later, she returned to the phone. "Hey, Tiffany says it's fine if you join us, but you'll have to share my bed, as all the others are taken."
"You mean that you haven't found some boy to share it with?" I teased.
With a deliberate gasp, "Me, the pure and innocent angel?!"
"Right, the angel with the belly ring."
"Oh, yeah, I'll show you when you come. I got this cute jewelry for it too!"
"Uh, that's not really my thing," I said. And, it was true; I didn't wear {if husband==true}any jewelry except my wedding ring, which I had to give back during the divorce{else}any jewelry{endif}.
"Okay, I'll text you our address. It's outside Cabo. I've got to go, but I'll see you soon!" Miranda said and hung up, before I could even object.
So, it seems that I would be headed to Mexico to party with my sister... at four AM, fun.
