‘It is much more freeing,’ Emma admits some time later. She started out lying on her front, but as the sun moved overhead and more and more locals walked past without a second look, she gradually turned onto her back, exposing her small, pert breasts to the world. ‘It’s kind of nice, actually. I’ve had to be so careful for so long, just in case someone caught me changing or something, but now… no one gives a damn.’

You cough, amused. ‘I’m not sure that’s entirely true.’

‘Hmm?’ Emma follows your eyeline – then smiles. ‘Oh, bless him…’

There’s an awkward, skinny guy trying very hard not to look like he’s looking at you – then he catches your eye guiltily, and looks away. He’s young, can’t be more than nineteen or twenty, wearing round spectacles and blue swimming trunks – and his chest alternates between pale white and an alarmingly red shade of sunburn.

‘I think you’ve got a fan,’ you say lightly to Emma, tongue planted firmly in cheek. Emma just shakes her head.

‘Don’t be so mean. If he comes over, he’s getting an autograph and a smile just like everyone else, and you are not to make comments.’

‘You take all the fun out of life.’ But the kid doesn’t look like he’s going to come closer any time soon. The blush that started in his neck has now spread all the way up to his cheeks and the tips of his ears, and he looks totally embarrassed, glancing up at the villa every so often like he wants to leave.

‘Poor thing.’ You look up to see Emma gazing affectionately over in the kid’s direction. ‘How was he to know? The internet’s patchy around this place, anyway – maybe he hasn’t heard about the leaks yet.’

You chuckle, reaching for your drink. ‘Nice surprise for him. then. His biggest teenage fantasy, Hermione Granger, sunning herself topless in the Caribbean.’

‘Oh, stop it!’ A strange mixture of nervousness and excitement flickers over Emma’s face. ‘I’m just going to ask him how his day’s going. I’d hate for him to go home upset, holiday ruined because he thinks I think he’s a perv.’

You blink. ‘You sure that’s a good idea?’

‘Yes.’ Emma’s already beckoning the kid with one hand. It takes him a moment or two to notice – then his head swivels around comically, like he’s looking for the person she’s really signalling.

Emma looks charmed. No, you, she mouths. The kid’s jaw drops.

Stumbling, hesitating, he makes his way over to your sunloungers. You give him a lazy salute from behind your sunglasses, which he hastily returns. Emma smiles up at him, teeth shining in the sun.

‘Hi there! Sorry, I saw you looking over and I just wondered whether you recognised me.’
