Chapter 12 by crunchyspag crunchyspag

The first day of the contest

Eliza has a surprise

You and you entourage meet up after breakfast and go to the meeting place, the same one as last time. You planned to arrive earlier this time to get a better spot, which you do. You wait a while in the morning damp as more groups show up. You try to make conversation with some of the other guests. You find the candidate of Byzantion to be a smallish man, with a swarthy complexion and dark hair. He is no great looker, yet carries himself with an air of **** confidence anyways. You try to initiate with one of his translators, only to receive a "My lord does not wish to be bothered" in return. You decide to keep looking for someone to kill time with and find none other than Miguel "The Moorslayer" himself. He stands tall and broad, unlike most of his countrymen. Like most of them on the other hand, he is tan and dark-haired. His face, likely average-looking at birth, has been mangled by numerous grisly scars from his many combats. Still, there is a kind of exuberance is him that overpowers his grim features. He greets you with a smile as you approach. "Hello, king!" he says. From the stilted way he said that, you can tell that Almain is not his specialty. Still, his people have relatively little contact with yours so the fact that he puts in the effort is endearing.

"Hello, Senor Moorslayer" you say cheekily. He laughs and waves away your sarcastic formality. There is an undeniable likability to the man, you must admit. You wonder how he maintains his cheer, with how much bloodshed he has seen. "Not necessary! Call me Miguel." "Ok Miguel. How are you today?" "Very well. I wonder what the lady says today, yes?" "Yes, I wonder too. What do you think is the first contest?" "I have no idea. But I hope it is a joust. I am very good at joust." He gives you a playful punch. You hear a motion in the crowd and you both turn to see. Lady Eliza and her cousin have reappeared and are now taking to the podium. She clears her throat in as dignified a manner of possible and begins."Greetings, honored guests. I hope you slept well. For today, we begin the second trial!"

A wave of confused questions ring out, ranging from group conversations to shouts at Eliza herself. She cracks that mischievous smile again, delighting in the chaos. She motions for the crowd to be quiet and the crowd follows suit. "You all know, of course, that the first trial was last night? The Trial of Chastity?" Many in the crowd start to mutter again, this time angrily. These must be the ones that failed. Hang on, are you among that group? Eliza is still smiling. "Of course I would want my future husband to be a man not ruled by his groin. Perhaps that trial should count for two points? Chastity and perception!" The crowd does not enjoy her jest. "Still, that would ruin the neat 5-point scheme I set up. I see some of you are upset. If anyone doesn't like the way I do things, they are under no obligation to stay." The angry mutterers quiet down, though you can tell they are still mad. You can't help but feel that their anger is misplaced. Sure it was a trick, but they need to take some responsibility.

"I have recorded those who did and did not pass the trial. At the end of the contest, the four suitors with the most points shall move on. Now that that's out of the way, I shall explain today's event, the Trial of Humility. In this trial, you must don the rags of a vagabond and beg in the streets. The top earners shall receive a point, while those who refuse or earn little shall not. Simple enough, no? I need to be sure that my husband will not be held back by foolish pride in pursuit of a greater goal. Goodbye gentlemen, and good luck." She gives a curt nod and walks away.

Begging? It will wound your pride a bit, but you may have an advantage. You encountered men from mendicant orders during your training, perhaps you can remember something useful from them? Your team wishes you good luck and gives encouragement as you prepare for today's challenge.

How does it go?
