Having the Housemistress pluck you from an untidy snooze at your scriptorium desk straight to breakfast, freshened up with a little magical spit, polish, and powder, and then charm you into being her son's -- her son's -- new Beavertail pal to get him started?

It's a bit much.

You stare out the window at the end of a hallway in House Beavertail's wood-paneled dormitories and recall what Headmistress Iris Amethystine told you about needing love, not adoration. Or was it kindness, not adoration? That was such a night, your eyes quickened to see the aliveness of everything. Was that the world in which Headmistress lived, when she wasn't condescending to lower herself to manage the ungraceful messiness of sloppy little witchlings like yourself?

Or sloppy little witchlings like Buzz, perhaps. It seemed, perhaps, improper, for Housemistress to pull strings for her son the way you suppose she must have, but, well, you, Tess Lectura, were here exactly because Headmistress pulled strings for you.

Mercy. It has a strange taste, that word. But you know it from the Beguines who kept you after your time as the Witch's copy-girl ended.

Might as well make a start. You rub a fingertip on your glasses to give you a plain and studious look, watching your reflection in the windowpane until all was right.
