Chapter 12 by Zingiber Zingiber

What's your next step in getting Buzz settled, meeting instructors, or using your spybook?

ENCOUNTER Buzz (+Diligence) to drill him on the basics. He already has a Broom Polo appointment!

As much of a disappointment it was to have your transformation of Buzz's wall turn out to be a transformation of your own wall, you owe him (and the Housemistress, his mum!) your best to get young Master Beeblossom settled. You're not sure he's actually younger than you yourself, but he seems callow, in a way you've never been.

Or at least a way you don't remember. Perhaps the Beguines remember the little ginger-tressed witchlet with squinting eyes that they took in after you left your foster mother.

You buttonhole Buzz before the morning meal and let him know you'll be working with him today.

Roll +DILIGENCE(+2) using ENCOUNTER: ⚀⚁ + 2 = 5, Miss.

"Can't, sorry," Buzz tells you. "I'll be at practice for Beavertail's Broom Polo team. I'm a bit off my best, I'm sure, so I'll need to be catching up."

The Tutor confirms that getting Buzz settled "as soon as you can" is subject to interruption from other parts of House Beavertail, so however Broom Polo got ahead of spell practice, so it'll be.

"Thank you, Miss Hemstitch," you tell her. "I want to make sure I understand what comes first."

You hold your peace and don't sigh or flounce. But your glasses are mirror-faced for the rest of the day. Because you don't want to put yourself out any further just to graciously suppress your oh really, what now? eyerolls.

Well, if tackling your goal head-on isn't getting you anywhere, there is your spy book. House Minerval taught you well in the ways of Similarity and Contagion, and your hand-copied magical exercise books are now distributed around House Beavertail, and perhaps beyond, to the other Houses.

You always wanted to know more about regular people, you know, like, not yourself. Other students.

You find a little tucked-away corner, paneled with Beavertail's wax-rubbed wood, with a window seat and a reading shelf. You cast a ward around your little study place and draw out your spy book.

Traits: Ambition -1, Bravery +0, Cunning +1, Diligence +2.
Talented Transformer: +1 to Move rolls including casting a Transformation spell.
Unpurged Minerval: Tess can use MIND MELD or STAMINA as House Sex Moves.
Spybook: Use CAST A SPELL to use MIND MELD to spy on and learn about other House Beavertail scholars studying from spellbooks you scribed.
You have a GOAL (-2 vs. Diligence) from Housemistress Beeblossom: Get Buzz settled in as a Beavertail scholar to the Housemistress' satisfaction.

You have 1 XP.

CAST A SPELL: Roll +CUNNING(+1) to tune in on the users of your spellbooks. On a success, apply MIND MELD to learn a secret or a spell from one of them. 2d6+1 = ⚄⚀ + 1 = 7.

For CAST A SPELL, on a 7-9, choose one.

  • Partial effect. You get a sense of people studying from your book, and perhaps who has your book, but no secrets or spells.
  • Fumble-success: The spell takes effect and backfires. For example: cause disruption or damage (GET OUT OF TROUBLE), or the target of your spell learns a secret or a spell from you as well, or the target knows it was you snooping and is resentful (gain an ENEMY).
  • Success by main ****: The spell takes effect, but you take a Consequence or faint.

A suggestive Random Event from the One Page Oracles: 9H AD, Command (Social), The Player Character (Technical). "Tess must teach others...", "Tess must make a public explanation and apology..." "Lupa dares Tess to prank an instructor's spellbook." "Fluvia insists that Tess help spy on her instructor via book linking." or even "Anyone who thinks of Tess while studying from one of her copies also commands her presence, assistance, or attention. Take a CONSEQUENCE: Distracted."

How do things go when you scry for other students with your spy book?
