Dina Asher-Smith - Part 4

After the general examination and the subsequent commercial break, Amy introduces the next part of the show:

AMY: -Today, we want to demonstrate how our four basic vital signs change after physical exercise. For that, we are going to measure Dina’s pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure and body temperature. She will then run on a treadmill for ten minutes, and we will measure her vital sings again and observe what has changed.

Susan starts by checking Dina’s pulse, listening to her heart with a stethoscope and counting the beats per minute. Next, Amy measures her respiratory rate by counting the number of breaths per minute. After that, Susan checks her blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer.

The first three measurements are easy and non-invasive. After all, Amy and Susan must maintain the appearance of this being an educational medical show, and not only an excuse to expose naked celebrities. Dina, however, still feels the ambivalent sensation of being both embarrassed and turned on. She is still buck naked in the middle of a conference room full of dressed people and cameras! Little does she imagine that things are about to get much more embarrassing… and hotter.

SUSAN: -For the temperature measurement, we will need you to lie face down on this gurney, please.

AMY: -There are several things that need to be explained about the measurement of body temperature. The fist and most important one is that taking it orally is never recommended. It is not hygienic and, if we use a mercury thermometer, it can be dangerous.

SUSAN: -Most people check their temperature placing the thermometer under their armpit. It is important to know that axillary measurements are the least accurate method, since they give us the readings outside the body, at skin level. This measurement can be as much as one full degree lower than the real internal temperature. It is a valid way to check if you have a fever, but it is not precise enough to be useful in any kind of scientific experiment, such as the one that we are conducting today.

AMY: -The best way to measure the body temperature is by using the body’s natural orifices. The most well-known for this practice is the anus. However, while this is a very common procedure during childhood, many adults feel hesitant about rectal thermometers. An equally valid alternative for women is to use the vaginal opening. In normal circumstances, the readings inside the rectum and the vagina should be exactly the same.

SUSAN: -Today we are going to measure Dina’s rectal and vaginal temperature, and see if they give us the same results. See you after the break! Stay tuned!
