Chapter 14 by Mike the Red Mike the Red

Cleanup

Finally thinking at least a little clearly, I returned to the body and, like the supposed hero of some video game, I rifled through the man's pockets. In them, I found a pack of three cigarettes, a lighter, a wallet with an driver's license belonging to Miguel Gutierrez, which told me nothing of immediate import, but which I slid into my clutch, once I found it dropped next to a couple cigarette butts. Finally, I found the man's cell phone and, thankfully, I was able to use the man's thumb print to unlock it.

My first call was to my office, hoping that someone would pick up.

"Hello, you've reached the the New York Field Office..." I punched in the numbers to bypass the public lines and direct the call to my department.

"Hello?" came the semi-familiar voice of Kate English, our new girl who was stuck working the night shift.

"Kate! This is Alex, uh, Agent Douglas. I'm so glad that I caught someone," I babbled. "Kate, I need you to find out who's working the night shift in the tech department and transfer me to them."

"Oh, um, sure, Agent Douglas."

After a brief but surprisingly obnoxious bit of "easy listening" music, a voice picked up, "Hey, this is Carl in Tech."

"Hi, Carl. This is Agent Douglas. I'm away from the office with a phone that I got from a criminal and I need you to do a remote dump."

"Okay, sure, I can do that, but aren't you supposed to call them 'suspects', not 'criminals'?"

"The bastard tried to kill me, so no, I get to call this one a criminal."

"Holy shit! Shouldn't you be calling someone else, like SWAT?"

"No point, the situation's, uh, neutralized. I just need help tracking this guy back to whoever he was working with."

"Yeah, I'd say so. Okay. The simplest way, if you have access to the phone is to just download a transfer program. I'm texting you the link right now. Just download the APK file and open it. Then, it's just a matter of making sure the phone is charged and has reception and I'll grab everything."

"Thanks, Carl." I said and gave him my cell number, in case he needed to call me back. Then, I sighed, glad that I had one fewer thing to worry about as I opened the file and let Carl work his magic.
