EPISODE 10: Fred, seeing a way to avoid being in the clergy, says he can do the clerk’s job. Garth knowing Mary’s condition gives him a chance, but he is hilariously bad at the job. Harking back to the first scene of the series she is trying on all her necklaces when Lydgate walks into the bedroom. He sensually kisses his wife all over performing cunnilingus before hugging her and telling her that he would never sell her trinkets.

COMMENT: ‘Roundmouth’ was the word of the day. We tried to include Victorian slang when we could provided the meaning was obvious. It was too late to film a lesbian scene between the Potter girl and the porn star which could easily have taken place in the now broadcast early episodes, but it got me thinking about another BBC landmark.

I think one of the problems with the book is that Lydgate and Rosamond seem to get increasingly hysterical, chapter after chapter, which is almost more unbelievable than the sex!
