What's next?
Clash of the Titans
It was a cold, lonely night, although not without its own beauty.
The clouds were transparent like glass so that the stars were unveiled, hiding behind each fluffy patch of stormy grey like brilliant torch bugs.
She loved looking at the stars, to a mortal man they were only dark dots of silver on a black canvas... but when she looked above to the heavens, She saw an endless cycle; a beautiful flash of fiery platinum dancing through the infinite abyss of outer space, in every moment that passed, she watched a birth, a growth and a **** occur in a timespan that no mortal man could ever even begin to imagine.
If she had her wish then she would gaze up at this cycle of beauty for the rest of her days... but her wishes rarely came true.
And so, She clutched the hem of her long emerald gown of fine silk and arose on supernaturally steady feet: The time had come.
The Moonlight illuminated the broken battlements of the tall tower on which she stood, alone.
For as long as she could remember she had felt the loud hammering hoofs of an Ill Omen far before it came to plunge her life into chaos. When some kind of catastrophe was near, her skin would flush with Goosebumps, her face would grow tight with unknown anticipation and her fingers would go painfully numb.
She flexed her hands uncomfortably, trying to remove the discomfort from them, trying to ignore the inevitability of whatever bad thing would come, but the feeling within her; eating away at her stomach was far too strong and with its coming only seconds away, she finally realised that this warning was entirely familial.
"I felt you enter through Antoinette's dungeon, I have shielded you from fathers' eyes but it will not last for long. You shouldn't be here, Sister"
A voice called from the darkness "You of all people, should know all to well, I never play by the rules."
"I didn't think you'd ever return to this place, I thought you too intelligent."
"Well that was obviously a miscalculation. It wasn't exactly difficult, and besides, there is only one sanctioned with the right to end my journey... and she is apparently too indisposed to do her job"
Turning, she faced the figure that stood a ways from her on the high tower where disturbance was rare, although She knew that the two of them still had precious little time before the real monster noticed.
She at first did not quite know what to say, but the words eventually found her "Why is it that you have come then?"
"I... encountered an old friend, enemy, experiment? who truly knows the difference anymore. She reminded me of Rosie when she was young, and that reminded me of you, I've been thinking about you ever since. All these years and you're still nothing but his puppet aren't you? I had hoped that some kind of change had occurred, but I was clearly wrong, nothing has changed."
Although unaccustomed to speaking to one so thoroughly exposed to mortality, she did her best to remember what emotions felt like; how to express and care, but humanity was not like riding a bicycle as the living saying went, it was more like a ladder slathered in gore, you could climb as high as you wanted, but in the end, you'd just slide back to the bottom again. "No, it hasn't. Change is not our way."
The Figure's face creased with fury "Oh but you've had plenty of change, you've had more change than any of us could imagine, and yet you came crawling back like a worm in shit. I imagined reuniting with the girl I knew, the one who remembered what love felt like, for her true family, for me."
"It is my love for you that stops me from calling him at this very instant." She professed in a tone a little too cold to be comforting. Her face fell as the darkness grew darker, and the air grew cold "Pft, true family? if you were able to escape the demented delusion that is your life, then you wouldn't ever say those words to me. In reality owe you nothing, you have taken too much from me to forgive. You ripped my real home apart... You killed..." She shimmered. still recalling how she was **** to watch from the vast red sea, as her sister tore his chest open "...You killed my Rommie, and you put my son on a path that he insists on walking alone."
The Figure gritted her teeth, balling her powerful fists as she paced rapidly "Do not patronize me, since before any of us walked the path of blood, You have been a pathetic little fathers pet, bowing and folding to his every whim without question, lying and scheming with that pathetic little smile on your face. And your little pet project in Wallace? an unfeeling, uncaring wretch like you is incapable of anything, save for licking Alucards' boot, nothing you say will convince me that you love that sham you call a 'family' when you left them all to wallow in the filth of mankind"
"And why is it that You think I have done so?" She shot back quickly "By the blood god, can you not think outside of a perspective that is not your own? when will your torrent of self-pity come to an end, sister? when will you stop thinking that the world is against you in some sorry attempt to escape your own madness, and start asking yourself the important questions: who am I, what do I want, what do I believe in? My first and foremost responsibility had always been to this family, to Rosie, to father, to you, to mother."
"Don't you dare bring her into this, do not ever try and use her as a tool against me again. When Granfer was cast out, cold, weak, dying, I begged for your help, I got on my knees and pleaded, but you wouldn't even hear of my woes. He was the only good thing that we had, our one true ruler and you spat him out into the shit like he was nothing."
She paused, lamenting her Grandfathers memory "I am sorry, I truly am, but you didn't understand then... and You don't understand now. Grandfer knew that if we fought, we would have been tortured one by one until our father had his way. What's bad about it, is that I think you knew it, you always knew it, but just as always, you blind yourself to the truth and for what? pride, some faux attempt to grasp at something we can never truly have?"
The Figure pointed her taloned finger like a spear towards her sister "YOU HAVE HAD IT, YOU HAD IT AND LET IT SLIP THROUGH YOUR FINGERS! BUT I WILL NOT, LET IT SLIP THROUGH MINE. now tell me, tell me how you did it, tell me!" She demanded, "Tell, Me!!" the figure sobbed, red tears running down her cheek "Tell. Me." She pleaded, as if they were girls again, following their Granfers mighty caravan across lands so young that they would not see brick or rivet for 4000 years.
She moved forward, gliding across the hard cobbled ground towards the Figure "I... I... I want to, I promise on every star, alive and dead, I promise on our blood and the time we have shared, I promise on our mother's grave, I want to..."
The Figure peered up, her eyes hateful and lost "You won't."
"I can't." She corrected "If I tell you how I started my family, then the result would be-"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm sure you'd feel your stupid little tingle if I dared allowed myself a moment of happiness. I have tolerated you hovering on the fence for 4000 years, but I am finished with you and Rose, I will get what I want no matter how many corpses pave the road to that victory!" It was as the figure arose, wiping her eyes, that she realised how exhausted and broken she looked. Once her sister had been the pride of their house, the next true heir worthy of the mantle of Dragon, passed from her Father's father from his father... but it was clear that future was forever lost.
"I am sorry, I am so sorry. But you are not... You are not yourself, you haven't been yourself for a long time. Just please, sister, see reason. I stood vanguard between He and you both since He lost his mind, can you not see that this is what he wants? You are just being exactly what he made you to be, a machine fuelled only by domination. Please, it is my turn to beg now, stay here, I have been building a plan for years now, we can fix your mind and your body, we could..." she lowered her voice "...we could overthrow him together, but you have to submit to him--"
The Figure snarled at the thought.
"No, please, you must submit even for only a short time, it is the only way to survive. with every 20 years that pass, He grows closer to surpassing even Cain, if we worked together, we could find a way, we could make the life that we've dreamed of since the beginning."
But she knew that she'd already lost her, by the blank and fractured look in the figure's eyes "A life under that Abomination, is no life at all. I'd rather die alone than become his **** again."
She nodded "I understand. I know you think I don't, but I meant what I said, I'll always love you, Valerica, always. Please leave my true family alone, don't get yourself killed over this."
"I died a long time ago. But I will feel the life within me, before the end. Goodbye."
The feeling began to return to her fingers, and She sat back down on the hard stone, gazing back up to the stars. She realised it was all the same, just like Granfer always warned:
"The further you try and stray from your father's path, the closer he will draw you directly to it. Keep your enemies close, Elizabeta, and some may survive to see the clash of the titans."
