Choices

When Spencer pulled up by Miss Appleton's large house, Evelyn took a deep breath. As much as she was hopeful that things will work out, her more cynical side couldn't help but feel there would be a catch to her good luck. Waiting in the driveway was an older woman and a middle-aged man who towered over her. Out of the car, Evelyn and Spencer approached the two waiting for them.

"Hey." Evelyn said.

"You must be Evelyn?" The woman replied.

"Yes. You must be Miss Appleton?"

"Please, call me Carol."

"Of course. Sorry, we couldn't meet under better circumstances."

"It's not your fault dear. Just wanted to do the right thing."

"Well, thank you. This is my partner, Spencer, by the way."

The two exchange a wave, as the man says "Shall we take a look at the vehicles?"

"Sure. You must be the lawyer I spoke to on the phone?"

"Yes ma'am." Frank nodded, before opening the garage door, giving Evelyn a look at the cars. The one that drew her eyes was the blue Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 SUV, the same model Spencer drove. Next to it was a 70's-era Ford Mustang which she only glanced at. Instead, she looked to the Jaguar XJR sedan. As she walked forward, Frank said "I've got specs and value of each car written down for you if you'd like them."

"That'd be great. Thank you." Evelyn replied.

"So you're free to test drive each one."

"Right. How long would I have to make a decision?"

"Well, I don't want to pressure you, but the sooner the better."

"Of course. Before we get too ahead of ourselves, I'm sure there's some paperwork to look over?"

"Certainly. I've got everything here." Frank handed her the folder in his hands. "Would you like to review them inside?"

"Yeah, I think that might be best."

The four move inside Carol's house and sit at the dining table. Evelyn reads through the contract, looking for any potential complications. Once satisfied, she passed it to Spencer who also looked it over. Whilst she was placing a lot of trust on her new boyfriend, she was confident he would spot the more intricate details. At worst, he was another set of eyes.

"It's good Evie."

"Okay."

"Would you like to test drive any of the vehicles?" Frank asked.

"Sure..." That's when Evelyn's phone rang. "Shit. I've gotta take it."

Once out of the room, Evelyn answered her phone. "Hello?"

"It's Marcus."

"Oh. How's it going?"

"Good. Real good. Sharon took a plea deal."

"Yeah?"

"She says Brian Hayes was her partner?"

"Darren's kid?"

"Yeah. That's why I called you. Brian's last known address is Darren's place. Hate to call you on your day off, but I figure Darren might be willing to talk to you."

"Sure. Give me half an hour."

"No problem."

After sigh, Evelyn put her phone away.
