Chapter 2 by armyofclaire91 armyofclaire91

What will happen to the people of Earth? Do we follow Carl, or someone new?

Carl tries to flee.

A purplish fog filled the room with a whoosh of air, and Carl did his best not to breathe it in. What had he been thinking, allowing this to happen?! Getting blasted with "science particles" seemed like a one-way ticket to something disastrous; he'd seen movies. Trying to keep his eyes closed as well, Carl stumbled around the room, bumping into various things. He needed a plan, dammit! 'Escape the room' was a good first idea, he figured, his mind latching onto the thought with a degree of desperation. He'd have to leave his apartment completely to get away from the cloud, but all well: knowing Step 2 wasn't important when his immediate situation was one of peril. What came after was a matter for another time!

One foot in front of the other, Carl shuffled his feet to avoid stepping on anything whilst still holding his breath. He nearly toppled over after running into the couch, but managed to reorient toward the door. Smiling to himself, he picked up speed. All he had to do was go in a straight line, and everything would be perfect.

Alas, he miscalculated. Something was in the way; or, rather, someone.

That "someone" was poor Evelyn, who had the gall to take up prime real-estate on a table overlooking the (still open) window by the door. Easily navigated around with one's eyes open, Carl was not in a position to make such a sensory check; instead, he knocked into the table full-bore, hitting his knee. Nostrils flaring, Carl saved himself from his initial desired reaction of calling out, but his bumbling cost him. The terra cotta pot Evelyn called home rocked, back and forth, before gravity chose a direction for it to fall: unfortunately, this was directly toward the young man who caused it all. As if seeking vengeance, Evelyn's final act was to land on her owner's feet, the pot shattering. He couldn't help it this time.

"Ahhh!!"

Air rushed into Carl's lungs, causing him to cough on the particulates in the smoky cloud. His eyes opened reflexively, further dooming him to exposure. Seeing Evelyn on the ground, he could only think of his own fate. What would become of him now?!

What indeed?
