**Branch Title: The Breakdown on Route 16**
Route: “Proof”
The rain had stopped an hour earlier, leaving the two-lane road outside New Atlanta slick and dark under the sodium lights. Robert Lynch kept both hands on the wheel of the new black sedan, jaw tight. Beside him, Carol sat with her gloved hands folded in her lap, white coat still buttoned against the lingering chill. The city limits sign glowed ahead: NEW ATLANTA – EST. 1866.
“You still think I’m like them,” Robert said quietly.
Carol didn’t look at him. “I think you’re trying very hard not to be. There’s a difference.”
He exhaled through his nose. “Then let me prove it. No more talk.”
A figure walked the shoulder under a gray cap, collar turned up, dark pants and work boots. Robert slowed, window already rolling down before Carol could protest.
“Need a lift?”
The man looked up. Mid-thirties, broad-shouldered, easy smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Moonshine Motel, just past the turnoff. Name’s Luis. Appreciate it.”
Robert unlocked the back door. “Hop in. We’re headed that way.”
Carol’s silence filled the car like smoke.
Twenty minutes later the engine coughed, sputtered, and died just short of the motel’s cracked neon sign. Steam hissed from under the hood. Luis climbed out, wiped his hands on a rag, and peered into the engine bay while Robert swore under his breath.
“Radiator hose. I can patch it, but it’ll take a couple hours. You’re welcome to wait inside. Bar’s open. Rooms if you need them.”
Robert glanced at Carol. She was already watching Luis—the way his shoulders moved under the thin white shirt, the calm competence in his hands. Something flickered across her face and was gone.
“Thank you,” she said.
The motel was quiet. One low building, a separate wooden outhouse farther back, a short bar with three stools. Luis poured them both something strong and dark while he worked. Robert drank more than he meant to. The liquor hit hard and fast. Carol sipped once, then set the glass down and watched Luis’s back as he disappeared outside again with a toolbox.
An hour later Robert’s head was swimming. Carol murmured something about the bathroom and stepped out into the damp night air. He let his eyes close for just a moment.
When he opened them the bar was empty. The clock on the wall said forty minutes had passed.
He found the room Luis had given them first—still empty. The reception desk—empty. Then the distant wooden structure behind the motel, the one Luis had mentioned. The door was shut. The whole thing shuddered with every impact.
Robert froze three feet away.
Inside: the wet, rhythmic slap of skin on skin. A woman’s voice, raw and broken open, begging in a tone he had never heard from her in their short marriage.
“Harder—fuck, harder—”
Luis’s voice, low and amused: “That’s it. Take it. Your husband’s soft little cock never reached this deep, did it?”
Carol’s answer was a high, wrecked moan that turned into words. “No—never—oh god don’t stop—”
Robert’s hand found the edge of the doorframe. He should have thrown it open. He should have dragged her out. Instead he looked through the gap.
Carol’s white coat was open, dress shoved up around her waist. One gloved hand braced against the rough wood. The other reached back, fingers splayed across Luis’s dark hip as if to pull him deeper. Her full ass bounced with every brutal thrust. Luis had both hands locked on her waist, driving into her with long, heavy strokes that made the entire structure rock.
“Look at this white pussy gripping me,” Luis muttered. “Married and still this tight. You’re going to remember this every time that boy tries to fuck you.”
Carol’s head dropped forward. “I’m close—I’m going to—ah!”
She came hard, legs shaking, voice cracking into a long broken cry. Luis didn’t slow. He kept fucking her through it, then past it, until she was babbling again, begging him not to stop even as tears of overstimulation streaked her makeup.
Robert’s stomach turned. He stayed anyway.
When Luis finally buried himself to the root and groaned, flooding her, Carol’s moan was almost grateful. Seed spilled down the inside of one pale thigh as he pulled out. She stayed bent over, breathing hard, gloved fingers still trembling against the wall.
Luis zipped up, calm. “Bathroom’s yours if you need to clean up. Or don’t. Your choice.”
Carol straightened slowly. She fixed her dress with shaking hands, smoothed the coat, and stepped out into the night without looking toward the shadows where her husband stood.
Robert made it back to the room first. He lay on the bed fully dressed, eyes open in the dark, listening to the door open and close. Carol undressed quietly. The mattress dipped. She smelled like sex and cheap soap and something richer that hadn’t been there before.
She whispered, “Robert?” as if testing whether he was awake.
He didn’t answer.
A long minute later she slipped out of bed again. The door clicked. Soft footsteps moved toward the bar.
Robert stayed where he was, staring at the ceiling, while the low sounds of a second round drifted faintly through the thin walls—Carol’s muffled gasps, Luis’s quiet laughter, the wet rhythm starting again.
By the time gray light crept through the curtains, the car was repaired. Luis stood by the driver’s side with a polite smile and oil on his hands.
“Safe travels. Hope the second honeymoon lives up to expectations.”
Carol’s smile was bright and tired. “Thank you for everything, Luis.”
Robert’s was a thin line. He said nothing until the motel was miles behind them.
Carol rested her hand on his thigh. “You proved your point. You’re not like your father.”
Robert kept his eyes on the road. The city of New Atlanta rose ahead of them—steel stacks, church steeples, and the quiet knowledge that inside those limits the law already belonged to men like Luis.
He drove on.
