Branch Title: Margaret’s Introduction
Carol had not planned to tell anyone.
She lasted eleven days after the second visit to the Moonshine Motel before the need to speak became stronger than the need to keep silent. Robert had grown quieter, more watchful. The notebook never left the study. The air in the house felt thin. So when Margaret Halston called and suggested coffee, Carol said yes before she could change her mind.
They met at a small café on the quieter end of Peachtree, the kind of place where white women still outnumbered everyone else before noon. Margaret was already seated, black gloves, dark hair perfectly set, a pale dress that somehow made her look both respectable and knowing. She ordered for both of them without asking.
“You look different,” Margaret said once the waitress had gone. “Not unhappy. Just… different.”
Carol turned her cup in its saucer. “I did something.”
Margaret waited.
“There was a man. At a motel on the edge of the city. The first time was almost an accident. The second time I went back on purpose.” Carol’s voice stayed low. “Robert doesn’t know the second time. I’m not sure how much he knows about the first.”
Margaret’s expression did not change. She simply reached across the table and rested one gloved hand over Carol’s.
“You’re not the only one,” she said. “Not in this city. Not even close.”
Margaret’s house sat on a tree-lined street in one of the older neighborhoods, white columns, wide porch, the kind of place that still employed live-in help. She led Carol through the front door and into a cool, shadowed foyer.
“Kanujo,” she called.
A tall Black man appeared from the rear of the house. Mid-thirties, clean white shirt, dark trousers, the quiet competence of someone who had worked in the same household for years. He inclined his head to Margaret, then looked at Carol with polite neutrality.
“This is Mrs. Lynch,” Margaret said. “She’s a friend. She needs to understand how things actually work here.”
Kanujo’s gaze moved over Carol once, measuring, then returned to Margaret. “Yes, ma’am.”
Margaret turned to Carol. “The Dibs Law is public. Everyone pretends it’s only about strangers on the street or men who knock on doors. But the private arrangements are older and quieter. Kanujo has been with this house for six years. My husband knows the rules. He also knows better than to ask questions he doesn’t want answered.”
She walked to the base of the stairs and rested one hand on the newel post.
“Show her,” she said to Kanujo.
Carol expected something hidden—a back room, a locked door. Instead Kanujo simply stepped closer, took her gloved hand, and led her into the formal living room while Margaret remained in the foyer, watching with calm interest.
He did not rush. He turned Carol to face the large mirror above the mantel, stood behind her, and unzipped the back of her dress with the same efficient care he might have used to open a bottle of wine. The dress slipped down her arms. She stepped out of it when he guided her. His hands were warm and certain as they moved over her hips, her waist, the undersides of her breasts.
“Margaret tells me this is still new for you,” he said quietly. “That you only recently learned what the city allows.”
Carol’s reflection stared back at her—flushed, half-undressed, a stranger’s hands already claiming her.
“Yes.”
“Then we’ll go slow enough for you to feel every part of it.”
He eased her forward until her hands rested on the mantel. One dark hand slid between her legs, testing, finding her already wet. He made a low sound of approval and pressed closer. When he pushed into her it was steady and deep, filling her in one continuous motion until her forehead nearly touched the mirror.
Margaret’s voice came from the doorway, soft and almost conversational.
“He’ll take his time. He always does. My husband is at the office until six. You have hours if you want them.”
Carol’s only answer was a broken breath as Kanujo began to move.
He fucked her with long, controlled strokes, one hand on her hip, the other braced beside hers on the mantel so she could watch everything in the glass—the contrast of his body against hers, the way her breasts swayed, the open-mouthed expression she could not quite control. When she came the first time he simply held her through it and kept going. The second time her legs weakened; he adjusted his grip and continued without pause.
Margaret watched the entire time, arms folded, expression unreadable.
Only when Kanujo finally finished—deep, heavy, flooding her the same way Luis had—did Margaret step fully into the room. She handed Carol a folded cloth and spoke as if discussing the weather.
“You’ll want to clean up before you go home. Robert will notice less that way. And if you decide you need this again, you call me first. There are others. A small circle. We look after each other.”
Carol straightened on unsteady legs, seed already beginning to slip down her thigh. She looked from Margaret to Kanujo and back again.
“How many of you are there?”
Margaret’s smile was small and precise.
“Enough.”
Carol drove home in silence. The dress felt different against her skin. The city looked different through the windshield. When she walked into the house Robert was in the study with the notebook open. He glanced up, took in her slightly disordered hair and the faint flush still on her cheeks, and closed the book without speaking.
Carol went upstairs to shower.
She already knew she would call Margaret again.
