Chapter 33 by android1966 android1966

Do they return to the Mariner's Flagon?

Bishir waits outside.

As soon as Naerwyn and the Akkadian leave Rechmon's shop they see Bishir nearby. The fact that the assassin has hung around outside for no obvious reason worries the Akkadian, the only explanation he can think of for Bishir to still be there is that he was waiting for them to leave. This suspicion is confirmed when Bishir quickly falls in beside them as they head down the street away from Rechmon's shop.

"What a beautiful morning ladies." Bishir says conversationally as he matches his pace beside them. "Out on a little shopping trip are we? I would hardly think Rechmon's dusty little bookshop to have anything of interest to two beauties such as yourselves, I suppose that is why you do not seem to have made any purchases in there?"

"Where we choose to shop and whether we make a purchase is of no concern to you." Naerwyn retorts, clearly finding Bishir's presence unwelcome.

"Oh quite so, quite so." Bishir agrees affably. "Your shopping habits are of no interest at all to me lass."

The Akkadian has been studying Bishir as best he can without trying to make his observation obvious. The lieutenent assassin is wearing his leather armour beneath his cloak. Not that this in itself is unusual, but the way that Bishir's hand never leaves the pommel of his scimitar is more worrying. The man is clearly on his guard as if he was expecting attack at any moment. His voice too gives a subtle tell to the Akkadian's experianced ear. Though attempting to sound casual, he detects tension behind Bishir's tone as if the man was braced for some event.

"I almost did not recognise Minaja, dressed as she is in peasant garb." Bishir comments, pausing to let his words sink in. "I must say you look much better when dressed as your guild usually demands Minaja."

The Akkadian dares to take a glance over his shoulder. Two figures trail the little group by a short distance. Both walk with the feral intent of purpose that betrays them as trained men of ****. The Akkadian has no doubt that Naerwyn is sharp enough to be aware of their presence also.

"You are Bishir, are you not?" The Akkadian replies. "Since you obviously know who I am, I see no point in denying my identity. My guild will be most displeased at your accosting me in such a manner in the steet."

"On the contrary, I am currently on contract to your guild and performing the task they set me." Bishir states. "It seems your guild is somewhat vexed by your failure to return from your assignment last night. It also is somewhat concerned about strange rumours that are circulating about precisely what transpired at the warlord Trimon's hold."

The Akkadian doubts very much that Bishir and the others are here to kill him. If that was the case then they would have been ambushed as they left the shop and would most certainly already be dead at this point. Bishir's next words confirm his reasoning.

"In fact so concerned is your guild that they contracted me to locate you Minaja and escort you back to their guildhouse." Bishir continues. "Since your redheaded companion here also features in the rumours that are abroad, I think it best that she too accompanies us to the whore's guild."

As Bishir has been speaking two more armed men detach themselves from the shadows ahead of them, making five men in total and both directions in the street covered. In his own body and suitably armed with Naerwyn to assist him the Akkadian could probably have dealt with such odds despite these men being much better trained than the simple guards they faced last night.

Go with Bishir?
