Chapter 4 by Ultra Bra Ultra Bra

What do you do with size-changing powers?

Be helpful

Sophie: "I could do so much good with this! Why, there's that roadwork nearby that's been bogging up my commute for three months..."

Piling on a good thirty feet of extra height, you saunter over to where you recall the construction site to be, careful not to step on any cars or crack the concrete. Don't want to cause more roadwork. The workers, on an early lunch break, prepare to run for their lives upon seeing a building-sized young woman walk up to them brandishing a broad smile.

Sophie: "Hey hang on you guys! I'm not the step-on-you-and-eat-you kinda giantess, I'm here to help!"

No help. They're already driving away at blistering speeds.

Sophie: "Darn. Looks like I need to do this myself."

Roadwork is surprisingly simple, you find. Just need to clear the area from all rubble and junk, pour concrete on the hole, even it out and wait for it to dry. In a few minutes you've found and filled all the potholes. After making sure to carry all cars and trucks away from the site, you stand proudly like a superhero, admiring your work.

Sophie: "Easy pickings! Hell, I could start a construction company by myself. 'No task is too big for Sophie', the billboards will say... Nah, I better not. That would drive others out of business."

You're about to leave, when the police arrive. An agitated man screams at you through a megaphone:

Police Officer: "Freeze! Put yer hands behind ya back and get on the ground!"

You look around awkwardly a bit, before deciding to comply. This is surely a misunderstanding and you'll be let go if you explain yourself. Then again this is America, but it's not like they'd shoot a white person.

Sophie: "Alright, alright, geez! I was just trying to speed up the construction..."

The police officers are startled by the earth-shaking quakes as you get down on your knees in preparation for lying down. As the previous officer gathers their composure, he yells:

Police Officer: "Wait, wait, stop! Just... Uh, we just wanna talk, a'ight?"

You remain on the ground legs underneath you and eye up the indecisive officers with confusion.

Sophie: "O-okay."

Police Officer: "Why did you chase off those workers?"

Sophie: "I didn't, I swear! I just showed up and they ran off without a warning. Please I didn't mean any trouble. Look, I even did their work for them! All these potholes are filled."

The officer is flabbergasted. Indeed, the scene speaks in your defense: the potholes which the officers had driven over themselves so many times were expertly patched. Potholes which, according to the schedule which he had personally inquired from the workers a few days ago, would've taken at least a month more to fill out.

Police Officer: "Let's not worry about that now. What's important right now is: Why are you thirty feet tall?"

Sophie: "What does that matter? Are you height-ist or someting? I haven't done anything illegal - surely I'm allowed to walk around town and help construction workers if I want to?"

Police Officer: "The OSHA may disagree you there ma'am, but... but you're a public disturbance!"

Sophie: "If that's the issue, then fine, I'll just shrink back, no biggie."

And so you do. In seconds, you're back to baseline height, give or take a few inches to close the difference to the burly officer. Officer, who still cannot believe what he has witnessed. Albeit law-abiding in the legal sense, your defiance of the laws of very nature leaves him baffled and fearful. You must be some kind of an alien, or a Goddess, or an apparition.

The officer decides to let you off with a warning, and implores that you take less inititives with helping people in the future. This much you promise, though you can't imagine how the police would attempt to imprison someone who can outgrow any jail cell and out-shrink any cuffs, nets and prison bars. Perhaps the officers recognize this and thusly refrain from attempting to arrest you.

So, helping people all willy-nilly isn't as simple as you thought. You, however, will not be discouraged by this. You must find some other way to help people.

What will you do to help people?
