Be a Bad Girl

But... but you're not a bad girl! You're a meek, friendly girl-next-door-type! You cry at children's movies and your ovaries practically explode every time you see a puppy. Just having awesome powers doesn't instantly mean you can harness some unperturbed angst you've accumulated.

Gosh, this all feels like such a chore. Where do you even begin with being bad? Steal candy from a baby?

It's worth a try, you guess. You scout out half a city with a single gaze, spotting a toddler in a stroller in the central park, holding a lollipop. Within a blink of an eye, your super speed has relinquished the delicacy from her feeble fingers. Too easy.

But then, the baby starts crying. She has yet to develop a theory of mind, and does not understand that someone else has taken her candy. Instead, she projects this failure upon herself alone. Your impeccable super hearing catches wind of this desolate wailing. It tugs at your heartstrings and gnaws at your conscience.

Sophie: "Oh... Oh no! What have I done, this is horrible! This is really cramping my Bad Girl image but... I have to make amends."

You swoop around the city, collecting loose change from the streets. Dropping what must be a 100$ overcharge of the coins and bills on the counter of a confection stand, you feel comfortable in taking a selection of candy and delivering all of it to the crying baby.

The mother, confusedly searching for the lollipop which she believes to have dropped on the ground, sees the large heap of candy now having appeared on the stroller and manages to comfort her child with the allure of more sugar. The crying stifles to a sniffle, and soon to a content babble. All is well.

Sophie: "Wow, I am not cut out for evil."

When you listen closely, you can hear crying from all over the city. Cries of fear, anger, sadness, loneliness, hopelesness. You can't help but feel a little overwhelmed by this. But - you have the power. You can help everyone. Stopping criminals will be easy, preventing robberies will be a cakewalk. Learning how to console a sordid soul will be a different task altogether.

Make no mistake: By your impact this city will be a better place.
