Prologue: One day before the update: Graggle-rock outpost, Fenmoor Swamp outskirts.

It was good being a woodcutter. Guards stood still all day. Soldiers walked but didn’t leave outpost unless players came. Woodcutters went out and cut wood every day.

He liked cutting wood, even if he didn’t always know what captain needed wood for. He thought it must be for sacrifice captain always said Gorgug demanded. He wondered if they would ever have enough wood for sacrifice, but thinking wasn’t woodcutter work, cutting wood was woodcutter work.

He looked over his shoulder, no Orc was looking. . . he moved behind some wood, then looked again. He always looked again, even though no Orc was ever looking back. He slipped past a few more wood and started cutting on the edge of cutting wood. This was as far as woodcutters could go. Soldiers could go a bit farther, into the uncut wood, but only when chasing players. That was their job, woodcutters cut wood, soldiers chased players.

The edge of the cutting wood was special. Not because the wood was different, all cutting wood was cutting wood, all the same. But here, at the edge, he was close to it. The uncuttable wood. Only one of the woods in the cutting wood was uncuttable. It was special. He liked to look at it, it was red, like the blood of the players, and now, when sun was high, the sun and the uncut wood were beautiful. The sun cut through the leafy wood to touch the ground. He liked it, he liked to look.

“Attack!”

He heard the captain cry out.

“Gorgug demands a sacrifice!”

He didn’t know why captain always yelled that at players, did they know Gorgug? Did they have the sacrifice?

He hid, like woodcutters did. He ducked behind a wood and shook. He didn’t know why he shook; it would be easier to charge and wait for respawn than to hide. But it was hard to not hide. It was hard to stop hiding, even after players left.

“Gorgug will avenge me!”

He had never seen Gorgug’s vengeance, but that’s what captain always said, so he believed it. He looked at the players, did players not tell stories of Gorgug’s vengeance? Did they not know?

The players left the destroyed outpost; they didn’t even loot the chests. Players were often like that, they would come through, make him hide, destroy outpost, kill Orcs, leave.

Players were coming his way. Walking toward him. This happened too, they would go to the swamp, sometimes they would see him and make him respawn. He tried to move, tried to charge, he hadn’t charged in a long time, all his legs did was shake. Woodcutters didn’t used to shake, woodcutters charged, chopped players, then respawned. But things changed, and now woodcutters hid. It was the way of things.

“Look Joe, they really do hide now.”

“What?”

“Over here, the woodcutter.”

Player was looking at him, but he still couldn’t move.

“I don’t see anything.”

“Seriously, what’s your stealth detection?”

“I’ve never raised it, that’s a hunter or rogue skill, warriors don’t raise that.”

“Do your AOE taunt.”

The second player held up his shield and banged it with his hammer, the sound was loud, angry, insulting. He wasn’t shaking anymore, he was running, he was charging, he felt energy and anger, he didn’t care about the first player, he needed to get the other one, bang loud on shield one, that one needed to be chopped.

He reached the bang loud on shield player and chopped. He chopped hard, and again.

“Oh my god, I remember these guys.”

“Yeah, they hide now.”

"Since when?"

"I think it was two updates ago, when Orc's rising ended."

“Hey, you died to these once, remember that?”

“Yeah, because you wouldn’t tank them.”

“I told you not to shoot the captain first.”

Chop, Chop, Chop. This player was tough, but he would not let him bang loud on shield like that without chopping him for it, even woodcutters that hid and shook were still orcs.

“Dude, there’s three of them.”

“Yeah, I told you, they hide in the woods now.”

“Wait, those other ones hit me. I actually took some damage.”

The chopping was interrupted by the player spinning around, the player’s hammer came towards him, he saw it, and then stopped seeing.

. . .

He stood up, looked. The outpost was broken; no other orcs had respawned yet. The players were gone too. Time to work.

His favorite thing was chopping near the uncuttable wood, seeing the sun cut through the uncut wood and knowing that it would always be that way, always good to look at, no matter what. His second favorite thing was chopping wood to rebuild outpost. He walked to cutting wood and chopped. The other two chopped as well. They would chop the wood, the outpost would be rebuilt, guards and soldiers respawn. Later captain would respawn and again work for Gorgug’s sacrifice. He looked over shoulder, progress bar moved, the outpost walls rebuilt, one part at a time. Players destroy, but orcs always come back, always rebuild, always fight, hide, and chop. And the uncuttable wood was always there, the gods made sure of it.
