‘Only to yourself and our family’s reputation,’ Leo put in sternly.

‘To be honest, I didn’t know you’d be here, Alexia, although I am of course delighted to see you again. No, I’m actually here on behalf of the law. I’m seeking the beast.’

‘Yuck,’ said Alexia, ‘horrid business.’

‘Horrid indeed,’ said Leo, suddenly growing a little pained, ‘all this talk of the beast has put me in mind of Verdina. If you’ll excuse me… Riolta, will I see you at out little party tonight?’

‘You may,’ said Riolta, ‘although I might be “on duty”’.

‘Until later then,’ said Leo, and went out of the room into the adjoining suite.

Riolta looked at Alexia, ‘so tell me something new…’
