Chapter 6 by ElizaLariana ElizaLariana

What am I wearing outside?

A yoga outfit

The likely activity a young woman like me would do outside is to do some yoga and hopefully it would be a good sight to see coming from a black man working with his hands in the warm sun, who’s old enough to be my father. I don a pair of yoga pants and a sports bra and take my mom’s yoga mat and go outside. Our backyard has a pool, but nearer to the house is a wooden deck. If I remember correctly, it was also my neighbor Lucas who planned out, got materials for and constructed the deck, and in exchange was invited to many barbecues that my father held. Now a young woman he hasn’t seen before is going to be giving a lovely show of yoga on the very same deck.

I candidly walk out onto the deck, paying no attention to my neighbor, acting like I’m only focusing on my activity and nothing else. I lay the yoga mat down, perpendicular to how the boards of the deck are aligned and proceed on doing various yoga poses. I’m not particularly well-versed in yoga, so I only do the more popular ones. I start with a standing Mountain Pose, which hopefully would give Lucas an idea of what my side profile looks like. Then from there, I transition into a Downward Facing Dog, giving a view of the curve of my buttocks.

From there, I transition to a Warrior pose, with one of my legs bent forward and the other stretched back behind me. Both of my arms rise straight above my head. I’m hopeful this gives a new view of my lower body, which isn’t particularly toned or muscled. It would give a good view of my ample breasts, which are constricted in my sports bra.

The next pose I do is another standing pose. Just like the Mountain Pose, I instead bend at the waist, easily reaching my palms to the ground next to my feet. This will definitely show my flexibility and maybe another view of my ass. My gaze is towards the town, which is down a hill behind the row of houses, which my house and my neighbor’s house is a part of. Never do I turn to face where my neighbor would be and so, for the moment I’m blind to whether he’s watching or not.

When I do my next pose, which is the Triangle Pose, I choose to face towards my neighbor’s house, where I find him making measurements to where the vertical boards will go. He already has the foundation of the fence done, but the vertical boards are still neatly stacked in his backyard. When I turn to face his house for the purpose of my next pose, I see that he has his back facing me. I wonder if he ever turned around to watch. As my thoughts run wild, I proceed to do my pose, which has my feet spread apart, creating the triangle in question. Next, I extend my arms out like a T-pose and bend sideways, meeting my fingers with the toes of my foot and then doing the same for the other side.

My last pose is a balancing Tree Pose, which has me on one leg, the other bent with my foot placing tension on my thigh. I then lift my arms like a Y, making the tree of the pose. This is when my neighbor Lucas turns to look at me. I smile at him and he smiles back. This gives me the signal to approach, though I try to stay on the deck in my backyard. “Lucas, right?” I ask.

“That’s me. Are you related to the Flores’?” he confirms he is indeed my neighbor Lucas and asks how I’m related to the family who lives in my house. Flores is my last name by the way.

What do I tell him?
