Chapter 7

How do the people react?
A little mixed, but most appreciate the chance.
At first it is quiet. A few guys far away start to giggle, considering it some kind of Joke. Others are sceptic or obviously against it. Others start to whisper interested. Guardian seems to wait for all of you to understand what he just says, but that makes the silence even more awkward. It takes a while until a guy called Luis, a quiet and shy but still nice guy who you sometimes meet in the dining room, raises his hand unsure as if he would be in school.
“Is this … well … Is this a kind of probation offer?” Luis asks shy, “are you offering us probation and … a job?”
“Exactly,” the second Shadow Blade takes over, “The worldwide increase of superhuman criminals make it necessary to improve our own ranks with specially gifted people. Police and military already are made of enhanced humans and freelance consults for magic or high-tech crimes. But that might not be enough in the long term. So, we want to offer you to assist the local police and emergency services in their work. If you agree to join the program for five years, you will get probation, a special training, a place to life, standard payment and the chance to fully join the emergency services after the five years are over. We offer this chance to everyone in a juvenile superhuman detention center and also some very gifted normal humans. It is a chance for you to start a new life.”
“That’s bullshit,” Raphael screams loud and angry, “why the hell should anybody take this stupid offer? Why do you offer it in the first place. You are the reason most of us are even here. And you called the group so that it sounds like >rag<.”
“You are here because you committed crimes against your fellow people,” Cosmic interrupts and has visible trouble staying focused and diplomatic, “and we do this to help you leaving your old path behind. If you want to stay and become a superpowered henchmen or some other criminal, nobody will try to stop you. But for those who want a second chance, this is it. And who knows, the best of you could one day even become fully members of the WLH. And … I admit, the guy who came up with the name maybe did a bad joke, but that doesn’t lower the importance of the group.”
“Is this offer for every superhuman?” Kaira suddenly interrupts Raphael’s next attempted insult, much to his anger, “or do we need some special skills? Or are we refused when we have some … intense flaws.”
“We do not take inmates who are constantly violent or committed murders in the past,” Spark answers strict, “the united nations approved the project but did not agreed to release killers. Despite this, we all know that your superpowers change your behavior. Sometimes more intense than other times. This is not a problem. We accept everyone who takes this second chance serious.”
“What exactly would we have to do?” one of Raphael’s goons asks provoking “collecting waste or help grandmas crossing the street?”
“If it is necessary, yes,” Guardian replies, and hides his annoyance very good, “you will get assigned to a part of the city and over a special hotline, you get into action. Sometimes the police asks for your assistance, sometimes the ambulance and sometimes civilians.”
“That’s bullshit,” Raphael replies in another attempt to get the other inmates at his side, “we have combined enough strength to bring all of you down for good. What you offer us would make us basically servants of some overcorrect weaklings. Or government pets. Why should we serve you when we can rule?”
“I would like to take the offer,” a guy right next to Julian, whom he knows has magic powers, says loud, as if he did not noticed Raphael, “I have ten years in prison left. If you offer me five years of work, I am taking it. That’s not a problem, right?”
“Of course not,” Cosmic says happy about the approval, “it does not matter how much years you would have to stay. For those with less than five years, we can even negotiate something additional. Those of you who are interested in the program are welcome to stay and talk with us in a more civilized environment. Everyone else, I must sadly ask to go back to their schedule.”
Raphael and several others leave immediately. He is a hothead and probably considers this whole situation as an act of humiliation. Julian is quiet sure he plans some kind of trouble as **** for those who accept the program. And sadly, around a quarter of the inmates leave with him. The others stay and try to get a chance to speak with the heroes. Especially Cosmic.
What about Julian? Will he stay or leave?
