Chapter 2 by Apple687 Apple687

Who starts off with which rings?

A feminist teacher has both rings

Liz gazed in puzzlement at the rings on her desk, wondering how they had got there. Figuring she'd better keep them safe until she could identify who to return them to, she placed first the silver ring, then the gold ring, onto her right hand.

She looked up as her students filed in. Perhaps three-quarters of the students were female.

"Welcome back, class," she said after they were settled. "Any questions about this week's reading?"

Liz was frustrated but not surprised to see the only student raising their hand was Cassie. Invariably, every one of her classes contained at least one skeptical student, who she would take great pleasure in flunking at the end of the semester, but whose criticism she had to put up with until then. Cassie was this semester's skeptic.

"Cassie?" said Liz reluctantly.

"I've been studying the list of ways in which women are supposedly objectified, and I would question a lot of those claims," said Cassie. "I mean, it says we're viewed as instrumental, lacking autonomy, inert, interchangeable, violable, ownable, lacking feelings, identified by our body parts, defined primarily by our looks, and mute. Most of those don't match my experience at all. So I guess my question is: is it really true that men see us as instr-"

Liz interrupted before Cassie could finish her long-winded question. "I think the best way to deal with that question is to for you to ask about one item at a time, so I can explain each point and the other girls can share their experiences with each issue."

Cassie looked down at her list, trying to decide: Which of the ten points should she ask about first? Or should she spite her teacher and just ask about the whole list at once?

"Alright," Cassie began. "Is it really true that men perceive women as...?"

How does Cassie finish her question?
