5 years+ later (bad timeline)

Being such a small percentage of the population, and having such a dramatic impact when they first appeared, humanities fear of what they don’t understand won out. Non-humans, regardless of their former human status, are deemed not legally people. They can be hunted, enslaved, even killed and eaten. Some basic animal rights still apply, but even those are frequently questioned by religious zealots who want either complete extermination or outright torture of former humans. While not everyone agrees that they are secretly demons or being punished by divine ordainment, most people don’t want them to have legal personhood and won’t treat them as a person.

Not every story here has to be dark, there are still good people in the world. But if you want the world as a whole to get better, that’s what the good timeline is for.
