Monstrous Change

Off the east coast of Japan, a sudden quake stirs the air. A wave expands outwards with a gust of wind that neither fades nor grows in strength as it expands outwards. Perhaps one day a discovery will be made that could detect the cause and nature of the wave, but for now it spreads unendingly across the globe, a sudden stiff breeze to those who notice, but nothing more.

While the event itself goes unnoticed, its consequences quickly become apparent. News stations erupt in panic over the following days as reports of people disappearing and monster sightings sweep the globe. The world is thrown into chaos and confusion.

Approximately 1% of humanity is changed into otherworldly creatures, mostly identifiable with various mythical races though not necessarily related. The wave does not discriminate against animals, so there are also plenty of non-sentient creatures wandering around. As well as the possibility of formerly non-sentient creatures now being sentient or even sapient and not really knowing what to do with that. The change was near instant, taking no more than a minute for the most drastic of transformations. While most remain within the same range of their former size, drastic size changes can occur. Many creatures possess strange abilities not clearly explainable by their anatomy. Not all creatures possess such abilities but some require them to survive, such as giant creatures that shouldn’t be able to survive in reality.
