Kate pulled the door closed behind her, causing it to make a soft clunk and causing her to flinch and hold her breath, eyes darting around in the hopes nobody would take notice.

After a couple of seconds she scurried away back to her apartment and started to examine the book.

Then she noticed how odd it was that a journal would start on any day other than January 1st. She looked closer at the seam, but didn't find evidence of missing pages.
