Chapter 5 by Succuboi Succuboi

What's next?

[GM] He's not the first person to have that idea.

Inside the tower is dark and musty, but at least dry. It clearly once belonged to a scholar of some sort: bookshelves line the walls, filled with weathered tomes in varying states of decay. Many more books and papers are scattered around the room, some looking as though they've been recently disturbed. Stairs to the second floor curl up one wall of the tower, and a trapdoor on the floor with a heavy, rusted lock looks like it might lead to a cellar.

The center of the room is dominated by a workbench. Anything of value that might have been used there is long gone, leaving nothing more than burnt up bits of components and a broken mortar behind. But as he gets closer, Krin spots something gleaming wedged in the floorboards beneath the table, hidden to less keen eyes. It appears to be a ring, made of rosy metal and set with a round white stone.

As he's taking a closer look at the ring, he hears footsteps on the second floor. If not for a lull in the storm, he never would have heard anything; whatever's up there is small and light. And heading for the stairs. He only has a few seconds to act before they enter the room.

[GM] You enter the tower and find the first floor abandoned. It looks like an old mage's study. A ring glittering beneath the workbench catches your eye. Take 25 xp and roll CAUTION.

[P] 1d20(14) + 3 = 17

[GM] You hear the faint sound of footsteps on the second floor, moving toward the stairs. Take another 25 xp and decide if you want to face what's up there or not.

[P] Okay, I'll crawl under the workbench.

What's a poor, pregnant elf to do?
