What lies beyond?

People say that before you die your life flashes before your eyes. All that flashes before your eyes is the light of truck through your window as it ploughs through the intersection.

Everything goes dark for a second and then you are standing on the footpath looking at the mangled wreck of your car as the paramedics and firemen try desperately to extract your date from the wreckage. At first you think you must be miraculously uninjured having been thrown from the car, then a paramedic runs toward you and passes through you, causing a flush of heat to rush though your body and causing her to stop and shiver. You turn around to look at her and notice your head sitting in the gutter. You stare at it for a while, wondering how it came off so cleanly. It's most definitely you. There is very little damage. If the rest of you is that well preserved you will be able to have an open casket funeral. You are amazed how calm you feel given that you just died... perhaps the lack of a body does that.

Actually you're more worried about whether your date survived and feel actual relief when you see them being placed in an ambulance. Again, interesting. You are more concerned with the living that yourself. Then again they still have a chance while you, being decapitated, do not, so you guess it is kind of logical. You continue to look around, watching people and trying to avoid having them run through you again, but after a while you begin to wonder if this is it, if you are going to stay like this forever.

As you are beginning to give up you notice, out of the corner of your eye, what seems to be a doorway in the air. You turn to look at it. Within you see a dark tunnel but there is a light at the end. You are about to step through when you hear a voice behind you.

"Good for you, choosing to go like that" it says "Me? I was never sure if that there was the Light a' Heaven or the Fires a' Hell. Maybe why I'm still 'ere"

You turn and see what you thought was just a bum looking straight at you just as a cop walks through him, stopping to shiver as he does.
