Chapter 1 by Sopaclover Sopaclover

Location: Oregon, USA

I was a paramedic when the first bombs fell. To be specific, I had been the lead paramedic at my company for a little over 2 years. I was the go to guy if anybody had a problem or question. I was also a bit of a jokester and a little outspoken. I had been passed over for promotion countless times but that didn't bother me too much, since a promotion would mean more paperwork. Everybody knew that I was the leader out in the field, no matter what management said. My partner on the other hand was very quiet but one of the best paramedics and smartest woman I had ever known. She was a beautiful redhead named Maria. She had freckles on her nose and cheeks and the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. Her eyes were a deep green, like emeralds. Most shifts her bright orange hair was tied in a bun, but every now and then she let her shoulder length hair flow down to her shoulders. I hadn't payed attention to her body too much, as I was trying to keep up a professional appearance and didn't want to ruin a good friendship. Every now and then I would sneak a peak at her heart shaped ass or her perky breasts, best guess was she was a high B cup or a low C cup. She was every man's late night fantasy woman, someone even I could see settling down with. There was just one problem, she had a serious boyfriend and I was too nervous to ever ask her out.

I remember when the bombs first fell. America's enemies had finally followed through with their threats. The bombers hit all the major cities first, D.C., New York City, Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and finally Portland. The news channels all showed the same things, a lot of destruction but not the total annihilation like everyone was expecting. Instead the bombs seemed to be filled with what looked like yellow gas. Gas attacks hadn't been used extensively since WW1 so it was highly irregular. when scientists tested said yellow gas they found it had strange properties. It had a very low dose of radiation and some unknown isotope as well as regular old mustard gas. the final effects on those who survived was still debatable, bu the reports coming out of those cities was not anything good.

That was when the first bomber was sighted overhead and the air raid sirens started.

Maria and I had just finished delivering a patient to a somewhat small hospital on the outskirts of our jurisdiction. We were walking back to our rig when we heard the low, thunderous roar of jet engines. We didn't have time to guess whose side they were from, we just ran inside. After what seemed like an eternity, we heard the first bombs fall, but they seemed to be further off than expected. We all ran up to the roof to see what was going on. That's when we all realized, the war had found us. I watched as the bombs fell on our city and its outskirts from the roof of the hospital. We watched as explosions lit up the dark, smoke filled sky. We knew that soon victims would start pouring into the somewhat small hospital.

Just then a cute nurse named Kristy yelled at me over the roar of the engines "WE NEED HELP IF WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT THROGH THIS WITH MINIMAL CASUALTIES. YOU AND YOUR PARTNER NEED TO HELP OUT ON TRIAGE!"

And that's how it started. Kristy, Maria, and I worked like crazy to sort through all the injured people flooding into the hospital. That was the last thing I remembered doing before I saw the bomber's shadow cross over me.
