The ground shook beneath their feet as Noah pulled Olivia through the empty streets, the rhythmic pounding of their footsteps drowning out the distant shrieks. The faint, acrid scent of smoke lingered in the air, mixing with the heavy, metallic tang of blood. Olivia’s wedding dress, once white and radiant, now clung to her, torn and stained with dark patches of crimson. It dragged against the pavement, its fabric matted with dirt and gore. The hem was frayed and shredded, remnants of a celebration now forgotten.Olivia’s breath came in ragged gasps, her chest heaving, her blood-soaked hands trembling. She wasn’t sure what part of her was more terrifying—the twisted, guttural growls of the zombies echoing in her head or the way her body felt heavy, weighed down by both the dress and the knowledge that the world they once knew was gone. It had only been hours—hours since the wedding, since the first crash outside the venue pulled them into this crazy world.

The wind cut through the streets like a blade, cold and unforgiving, stirring the smell of rot from the distant alleyways. Noah’s grip tightened on her hand, his fingers almost digging into her skin. His eyes were fixed ahead, scanning the streets with a desperation she hadn’t seen in him before. Every muscle in his body was taut, the military training he received in the Army flooding back despite having left the service 2 years prior.

"Keep moving," Noah growled, his voice low but strained. His breath formed a mist in the air, a sign of the cold that had settled over the town. His shoes crunched against the gravel, the sound too loud in the silence, like thunder echoing in an empty room.

Olivia nodded, but the sight of the abandoned houses, their windows shattered and doors ajar, sent a sharp spike of fear through her. The streets were eerily still, save for the occasional shuffle or distant scream. She could hear them, the zombies, but couldn't see them—not yet. It was the smell that made her stomach churn—the stench of decay, a sickly-sweet odor mixed with the acrid burn of ****.

The town was dying, and they were the last to realize it.

Noah stumbled, a jagged rock catching his foot. The sound of his knee hitting the ground was sickeningly loud, a sharp crack that echoed down the silent street. Olivia gasped, her breath catching in her throat, but he was already back on his feet, pulling her forward with renewed urgency.

“I can’t—" Olivia started to say, but her voice caught in the back of her throat. There was a sound, faint but unmistakable, like the scrape of something dragging against the ground. It was a dry, rasping noise that sent her pulse skyrocketing, an instinctual fear flooding her. She turned just in time to see a pale figure emerge from the alleyway—a creature that jerked like a puppet on invisible strings, its mouth open in an unholy snarl. Its eyes were lifeless, clouded and pale, its body stiff with the unnatural rigor of ****.

"Run!" Noah shouted, his voice cutting through the tension. He didn’t wait for her to respond. He simply pulled her along, his grip on her hand like iron.

The world around them blurred into a cacophony of noise—the crunch of their footsteps against the ground, the sickening growls and moans that filled the air.

As they sprinted down the street, a distant memory tugged at Olivia’s mind—the recollection of their wedding ceremony that very morning. They were standing together, hands joined, ready to commit to a lifetime of love, unaware that the world was about to fall apart around them.
