The twisted wish

The cabin

Chapter 1 by Thewindman

The tires hummed a low, rhythmic tune against the asphalt as the sedan wound deeper into the dense, green embrace of the woods. In the passenger seat, nineteen-year-old Amelia stared out the window, watching the trees blur past.

Not long ago, she had been the blur.

In their small hometown, Amelia was a legend. She was the girl with lightning in her veins, the undisputed fastest person in the county, and a shoo-in for a collegiate athletic scholarship. But a rare, aggressive neurological disease had changed everything in a matter of weeks. She survived it, but the cost was high: the disease had stolen her ability to walk. Now, instead of custom running spikes, her daily life revolved around the chrome and rubber of a wheelchair.

The hardest part wasn’t the physical adjustment; it was the looks. The pity from her classmates, the heavy silence that fell over the track team when she rolled by, and the constant, suffocating distractions of a life interrupted. She needed an escape to focus on her university studies, somewhere she could rebuild her life on her own terms.

That was how she and her mom ended up here, pulling into the gravel driveway of a secluded cabin hidden deep in a remote forest.

"We're here, sweetie," her mom said softly, putting the car in park and turning off the ignition. The silence of the woods rushed in to fill the void.

Amelia looked out. The cabin wasn't the rustic, log-and-mortar shack she had envisioned. It was a marvel of sleek, contemporary architecture.

Getting out took a little teamwork. With a practiced, gentle hand, her mom set up the wheelchair by the passenger door. Amelia swung her torso over, her upper body now incredibly strong from months of adapting, and with a little stabilizing help from her mom, she settled into the seat.

"Go on, check it out," her mom smiled, grabbing the first round of bags from the trunk. "I'll start bringing the luggage in."

Amelia rolled forward, her wheels crunching smoothly over the compacted gravel ramp that led to the entrance. As she pushed open the heavy glass door, she caught her breath.

The cabin was a masterpiece of modernity style. It was completely minimalist, featuring polished concrete floors that offered zero resistance to her wheels, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the space with natural light, and a wide, open-concept layout.

But the best part? It was entirely free from stairs.

Amelia rolled through the living room and into the kitchen. Every countertop was set at an accessible, sleek low profile. Smart tech was integrated into everything—voice-activated blinds, automated lights, and low-slung shelves that she could reach without stretching.

“Take care sweetie, make sure to call me whenever something goes wrong okay?”-her mom waves goodbye and drove away. Amelia was now alone in her cabin, were she will spend the rest of her days studying and exploring the wonders of this cabin.
