On May 22, 1971, Ontario place opened.

It had expanded over time, adding family attractions and new restaurants for kids.

In the summer of 2012 the park closed do to low attendance. The Government of Ontario issued a Request for information calling for ideas from private bidders to completely redevelop the park. Ontario Place general manager Tim Casey told the Toronto Star that "2011 will be our 40th anniversary. It definitely needs a revitalization, that’s no surprise. It’s a blank slate, we’re open to just about anything.” A formal Request for proposals process began that fall. The government intends to transform the park from a largely seasonal facility to a year-round attraction. The redevelopment was to have included the tearing down of the Cinesphere as well as other long-standing attractions.

On February 1, 2013, the government announced that the public sections of the park would be redeveloped, with a target date of 2017, the year of Canada's 150th anniversary. John Tory was announced as the chair of a Minister's Advisory Panel on Revitalization. All Ontario Place facilities were closed except for the marina, the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, the Atlantis entertainment venue and parking.

Following the provincial elections in June 2014, the government announced that a private corporation had put up a lot of money and the deal for Ontario Place to be developed into a better park for all was set.

Beginning in the summer of 2015, work walls went up around the main bridge ticket office, construction lasted to the winter of 2018 when it was announced the park opening date of July 17 2019.

Commercial’s for the park introduced the parks main areas and attractions.

Market square- has 4 restaurants, small markets and shops as well as games.

Soak city- a water park with 17 waters slides, a splash area, pump house, water park cafe, wave pool, lazy River as well as a toddler splash area.

Go zone- 2 small family roller coasters, flat rids, stage show, bumper boats, arcade, children’s and family games.

Adventure island- log ride, mega maze, simulator ride, other attractions.

Planet snoopy- children play area.

Adult hood- an adult only area with night club, bars, adult theatre.

Phase 2 announcement - it was announced than in 2022, there will be two rollercoasters to be added to the park.
