The University

The University

How much can a single campus affect someone?

Chapter 1 by SuperAte SuperAte

The new semester was starting. It was a time of new beginnings for you in a lot of ways. You had recently broken up with your girlfriend about 2 weeks before school started again. Your relationship was on the rocks for awhile so it didn't come as much surprise, but it did come with the usual negative emotions that come with such a thing. But you were excited. You were in your second to last year of college and were having arguably the best time of your life. Your roommate was your best friend and you really enjoyed your major in Criminal Justice. There were a few generals you had to tie up before beginning the capstone part of your degree next year. One of those required generals was a foreign language.

You didn't consider yourself a bad looking dude. Short brown hair, glasses, standing at a respectable 6 foot even. You certainly weren't jacked up with a 6 pack, but you also weren't what anyone would call fat. "Filled out" is what you liked to call it. You also weren't totally unsuccessful with the fairer sex either. You had your share of flings and girlfriends, but during the tumultuous time that was college, no one seemed to stick for one reason or another. Meeting and talking to strangers was something that came easily to you though, and it certainly helped when it came to talking girls.

The university you chose to attend was among the smallest in your state. It had none of the trappings of a major university and the classes were much smaller. This meant you got to know your classmates much easier as you were in close proximity to each other quite often. Looking at the foreign language courses that your university offered, the choice was pretty clear: German. Spanish was too boring and you took French in high school and hated it. Your university only offered a single alternative and that was German. You quickly registered and wondered what the course would be like. You didn't realize it at the time, but choosing that particular section of that particular class would have a profound and lasting effect on you. You signed up for your other generals and requirements and logged off to enjoy what was left of your break.

All that was left to do was to show up and start the next chapter of your life.
